Woah! 28 April 2010
Format:Paperback
As someone who has recently flown the nest and is now living away from my parents I am practicly a household virgin.

I had no idea or routine to my household cleaning and decided to get a book to help organise my house and make it show home worthy.

This book seemed very complete so I decided to buy it.

Well let me tell you, there is NOTHING this book does not cover it's huge! From everything from getting out tough stains to sorting out your holiday insurance and even eating healthily! It also has a daily, weekly and occaisonal routine (which was the only thing I wanted but I got a lot more!)
Everything is divided up into neat sections and there's an in depth glossary at the back.
The negative points of this book is it is American, so some things suggested you can't buy over here and the language is different.

The main & sub sections are:

Cleaning - Basic Cleaning Equipment, Furniture, Floors, Windows and Doors, Walls and Ceilings, The Kitche, The Bathroom, The Nursery and Children's Rooms, Porches Decks and Patios, Garages and Basements

Laundry & Clothes Care - Laundry Products, Doing the Wash, Ironing, Dry-Cleaning, Sewing, Leather and Fur, Jewelry Care, Packing a Suitcase, Clothes Storage

Food & the Kitchen - Eating Well, Smart Shopping, Cooking, Keeping Food Fresh, Equipment, Tableware, Entertaining

Decorating - Doing it Yourself, Painting, Wall Coverings, Window Treatments, Floors, Furniture, Wall Decorations, The Kitchen, The Bathroom

Storage & Home Office Solutions - Storage Stratergies, Home Office Help

Maintenance & Repairs - The Home Workshop, Mending China and Glass, Restoring Wood Furniture, Wall and Ceiling Repairs, How to Hang Anything, Doors, Windows and Screens, Floors, Heating Systems, Cooling Systems, Weatherproofing, Plumbing, Electricity, Roof Repairs, Gutters, The Yard, Decks and Porches, Patios and Driveways, Siding, Brick and Stucco, Fences and Gates

Home Finances - Managing Your Money Efficiently, Getting Credit, How Long Should you Keep Your Finacial Records?, Fraud and Identity Theft

Safety - Safety Basics, Childproofing Your Home, Safety for the Elderly, The Safe Yard, Emergencies in the Home, Indoor Pollutants, Home Security, Preparing for Disaster, Holiday Safety

Car Care - Preventive Maintenance, Tires, Accessory Drive Belts, Hoses, Visibility, Better Gas Mileage, Tune-Ups, Buy or Lease?, Used Cars, Defensive Driving, Slippery Conditions, Cell Phone Safety, Accidents, Breaking Down, Common Problems, Keeping Up Apperances

From The Critics

Publishers Weekly

This extensive, phenomenally organized volume lives up to its title: with this household handbook, there's no need for another. The book even manages to make such dry subjects as loading a dishwasher and installing lock sets reader-friendly and reasonably interesting. The chapters-beginning with cleaning and going through laundry and clothes care, food and the kitchen, decorating, storage and home office solutions, maintenance and repairs, home finances, and safety-are logically subdivided to help readers find topics quickly. They feature frequent boxes containing helpful suggestions ("keep a sponge mop just for rinsing floors; it is almost impossible to get all the cleaning solution out of a mop"), time savers ("paint large areas more quickly with the help of a power roller"), dollar stretchers, safety tips and advice on how to shop for specific items. Diagrams, checklists and focused sidebars (such as how to hang pictures, in the home decorating chapter) round out the detailed coverage. Neat freaks will pore over this work as if it were a suspense novel; the rest of the population will be glad to take its easy-to-follow advice as needed. (Apr.) Library Journal

As expected, the Good Housekeeping Institute-perhaps the most trusted authority on outfitting and running a household-provides a cogent, practical reference on just that. Like typical household manuals, it includes chapters on cleaning, clothing care, food, decorating, storage, repairs, finances, and safety. There is much information on choosing things that are durable and easy to care for so that a home can be pleasant and gracious instead of high-maintenance. Similar in tone and style to Better Homes and Gardens Making a Home, this volume includes sections on sewing basics and addresses new challenges like identity theft. Although not as detailed as Cheryl Mendelson's Home Comforts: The Art & Science of Keeping House, this book has a design and visual appeal that make it more browsable and less intimidating. Color-coded sidebars provide comments on safety, environmental issues, and dollar stretchers, as well as tips on when to call professionals. Uncluttered, detailed drawings are used to show the anatomy of various household systems, illustrate repair techniques, or suggest decorating options. Highly recommended for all public libraries.-

This book tells it all... 25 Oct 2005
By Annette Hester - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my young bachelor son; but after going through it, I am going to keep it and buy him another one. It is up to date on cleaning products, and tells you about so many things that most other books of this type don't tell you; such as, diagrams on how to iron, how to sew. It tells you when fruits and vegetables are in season and how to tell when they are ripe. I think it is the most complete book of it's kind that I have ever seen. It would be excellent for newly weds, bachelor sons or daughters just getting their 1st apartment. And it is great for someone that has been housekeeping for over 30 years...like me!! Buy it, you won't regret it!
