Product Description

Chris Rock presents this documentary offering an insight into the fiercely competitive world of Afro-American hairdressing. The film includes a visit to the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show, the annual trade show for the African-American hair care industry. It also looks into the dangers of many common hair-straightening treatments, reveals the alarmingly high cost of regular hair 'relaxing' and weaves, and asks what the ongoing pursuit of straight hair says about African-American cultural identity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny 8 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
It's a great look at Afr. American women's relationship with their hair, and how the hair products industry has grown and is constantl in demand. It's got the Chris Rock touch so it's obviously funny. I learned a few things: that you can never touch a black girl's weave/hair, that most hair comes from an Indian temple, and that girls as young as 3 or 4 are already relaxing their hair. Good movie/docu, great value!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good eye opener... 27 Jun 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This dvd is good eye opener as to the amount of monet unscrupulous business men and women making so much off the backs of unknowledgeable people. It is indeed an eye opener to me and my family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! 27 July 2010
Format:DVD
The documentary was revealing interesting and funny. It made me sit up and think and then rethink what I was doing to my hair. Relaxing afro hair isn't all about wanting 'good hair', but about wanting hair that's manageable. I'm reluctant to continue relaxing my hair because it does a lot of damage, but whilst there's lots of choice as to what to do with relaxed hair and weaves, options for natural hair are limited and it's true that people's perception of you change according to your looks. I remember taking the elevator at work every day with a guy who never gave me a second look, but on the day I stepped into that elevator with a shoulder length weave, I got noticed! Shame really because I was the same person underneath that weave as I was with the short nappy hair.

This film enlightens you to what goes on behind closed doors when it comes to relaxers and weaves, however once you've watched it once, there is no need to watch it again.
