Product Description

Product Description
In his four years with S019, the Metropolitan Police Special Firearms Wing, Steve Collins has been in over a thousand contacts: that is gun battles, with Yardies; IRA gunmen; East End gangsters, such as the notorious Arifs and their hitmen; drug smugglers from South America and elsewhere; and lone gunmen who have simply gone berserk. A judge commending the bravery of Steve's team said, "If only the public knew the calibre of the men that protect them". S019 protects us from chaos and violence London. These groups are expert in firearms operations in an urban environment - the SAS come to them for training. Collins gives the inside story of these operations, which we might otherwise only get to hear about when they make the headlines.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Guys Wear Black, 7 Mar 2003
By A Customer
An absolutely cracking read,so much so that I didn't want to put the book down. It gives a true insight into the real world of a British firearms officer, one that is not very often portrayed. Although some might find the language offensive, it is a true account of what a lot of people don't want to see, like I have already said a very worthwhile read from a subject that isn't well publicised and not many people apart from those on the inside know about.Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars The truth behind the Metropolitan Police Force Firearms Unit, 11 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I approached this book skeptically at first - thinking it would be another Andy McNab or Chris Ryan style SAS "We're better than everyone so F**k the lot of ya!"book - however it was one of the best non-fiction books about Policing that I've ever read - and I've read a lot. Ex-SO19 Sergeant Steve Collins gives more information about the arming, training, selection and day to day life trials of Specialist Firearms Officers in SO19 - Britains Premier Firearms Unit. Both this, and the follow up (The Glory Boys) are interesting reads for those interested in the workings of the Armed Police on our streets - without being overly "gung-ho".

Reading this book was a significant factor in influencing me to begin the largest ever study into the Personality Traits of Firearms Officers in the UK - my work will be published next year on completion of my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Criminology at the University of Teesside; Middlesbrough; England.

An exciting, informative and fast-moving read. Definately un-put-downable. I highly recommend this.

Kept me at the edge of my seat. Couldn't wait to read the outcome of each operation. Good insight on an agency where firearms are not always an option.
