Fantastic guide! 12 Aug 2006
By A. Betts VINE™ VOICE
A real labour of love for the author's debut guide - after trying nearly 8000 beers Steve must be too big to fit on the plane by now! A cracking book that starts to unwind the rich variety of beers in this diverse country, an introduction for the novice or an essential guide for the experienced German beer quaffer. Recomended

I dare say a good proportion of people from the UK probably think that a good beer guide to Germany will comprise no more than 30 pages such is the understanding of the different types of beer from this country. What this guide does is give us a comprehensive guide to Germany's beer culture and what to drink once you are there. Normally a guide of this size would have had teams of people roving around the country checking each state. To think that - with some help - this book is written and researched by one person is unbelievable.
The guide presents notable beer points of interest per region (the book is divided into regions) and then gives a brief description of each venue. The book is so full of places of interest that the descriptions have had to be cut down to the minimal. This is understandable given the sheer amount of information in the book.
Like any new book there are a few problems. The numbering system should be dropped and the maps improved to include place names. This would mean I'm not searching for fiddly numbers when a place name simply does the trick. Also there should be a separation between pubs and breweries. As a tourist I generally want to go around the pubs and I'm not so interested about the manufacturing plant. It can be easy to start planning a tour to the factory where there's nothing to drink!
Apart from those couple items this is a stunning book. If you're at all interested in German beers - buy it.

A must for anyone interested in German beer or who is visiting the country and wants to know which are the classic German brews. This must have been a real labour of love for the author.
