Product Description

Product Description
When it comes to donating your time or money, how do you choose which charities best represent your values and concerns? Where does your money really go? And can volunteers and activists really make a difference? "The Good Giving Guide" is the first guide for the concerned individual about how charities, NGOs and pressure groups work. Using examples from a cross-section of charities, it examines how your money might be spent, how to understand your charity's structure and accounts and how you can influence its aims. It looks at fundraising methods - from government grants and corporate partnerships to public donations - and questions which are most effective. It also explores the role of volunteering, activism and public pressure in our changing society and asks if civil disobedience can ever be appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help for charity donors, 22 Dec 2004
By Luke FitzHerbert (Totnes, Devon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent little book. It describes the largest charities in every field, from disaster relief to dementia, and gives typical examples of smaller ones.

There is an introductory section which has an excellent discussion of some of the issues and myths surrounding support for charities.

The book gets five stars, as it is the best of its kind that we have as yet. There is still a need for more detailed discussion of the charities in particular fields, as organisations apparently doing similar work can still be wildly different from each other - so I hope the authors will keep up the work!

(I write as a fellow worker in the field. If we were not all involved in charities I would probably call myself an envious competitor!)
