BBC Review

It's probably fair to say that Dionne Bromfield's debut album arrived too soon. That set, Introducing…, emerged in 2009 when the artist was just 13 years old. It suggested potential, but as the first singing to her godmother Amy Winehouse's Lioness imprint, there was pressure on Bromfield to meet incredible expectations born from such an association. Introducing… peaked at a chart position of 33, and the singer vanished back into the machinations of the major label side of the music industry.

Pleasingly, Bromfield's not just been given a second chance, but now has the right album from which to stake a claim on the nation's soul audience. The arrangements on Good for the Soul are superb throughout, strings sweeping in from the wings as punchy percussion demands dancefloor activity. At times - such as on the dramatic Ouch That Hurt - it genuinely captures some of that old-fashioned Motown magic. And when it's not looking into a past so distant for Bromfield that it must seem positively prehistoric (she's still just 15), the album dips its toes into the same waters that carried Duffy to so much acclaim on her first LP. Many a co-writer is involved, but this isn't a fractured listening experience; tonally, everything gels marvellously.

Questions remain, though, and most regard Bromfield's voice. One glossy magazine has claimed it's a "gorgeous soul voice"; a popular tabloid has stated that she's Shirley Bassey's successor. But the truth is that Bromfield is a talent yet to mature. She possesses the same nasal quality as Winehouse, and one feels that she may well have been encouraged to recall the off-the-rails star, what with her follow-up to 2006's Back to Black still no closer to release. Some turns feel full of affectation - nobody can deny she's got a powerful voice, but it can seem too try-hard at times. Give the girl another five years, let her vocals deepen naturally, and she'll be a really special performer. Right now, it's best to keep a lid on excessive hyperbole.

Said reservations aside, Good for the Soul is a great pop-soul record, brimming with feel-good tracks and as sure to appeal to listeners of the artist's age as it is those raised on The Supremes. A little more life experience and Bromfield will have the essentials to make a career-defining record. Until then, this collection continues her (rightly) gradual rise in no little style, building upon Introducing… and bettering it brilliantly.

Surprise! Surprise! 12 July 2011
By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The young Ms Bromfield got a leg-up from her wayward Godmother
Amy Winehouse with her 2009 debut of covers 'Introducing Dionne
Bromfield'. I can't bring myself to be unkind about it (for goodness
sake she was only thirteen years old when it was released!) but I truly
thought she'd slip in and out of vision without coming even close to
the fifteen minutes of fame to which Mr Warhol felt we are all entitled.

Wrong! Crikey, how wrong can and Old Wolf be?!

'Good For The Soul' is rather special in a number of ways.
Firstly, she sounds nothing like Ms Winehouse (who I love dearly);
secondly, she has co-written most of the 14 tracks on the album
and they are very good songs indeed; thirdly, the most remarkable
thing about the recording is the huge leap in vocal maturity achieved
by Ms Bromfield in the two short years since we first heard her.

It is a powerful voice (a power never wasted on flashy stylistic
effects); a soulful voice (listen to her cruise through the classy
'Foolin'' like a ship in full sail - a little bit Eartha Kitt, a little
bit Chaka Khan!); a tender and expressive voice (the beautiful 'Too
Soon To Call It Love') and a voice not afraid to have fun (the rip-
roaring finale 'Move A Little Faster'). It's all there. It's all good!

If you need further proof jump straight to 'In Your Own World' for
a little masterclass in fine phrasing and astute melodic articulation.
By any standard known to man or beast this girl is a major contender!

Methinks Ms Bromfield is going to be sticking around for a while.

Highly Recommended.

Being both an Amy Winehouse and Dionne Bromfield music fan I have been waiting for another album, so actually pre-ordered Good For The Soul (very rare for me). On first play I loved it. On second play it's even better. Lots of varied songs.

I'm usually one for getting an album and only really loving a couple of songs, but that's not the case for this. Dionne has done us all proud. And I suspect will get a lot of buys from those who are desperate for another Amy album. Sorry to keep making the connection but it can't be ignored, even if we'd like it to.

If you're thinking about whether to buy this or not, don't waste any more time, just do it.

And finally... Track 5 - Too Soon To Call It Love - gives me goosebumps :)

Good for the Soul 25 Sep 2011

This young lady perhaps did come to notice thanks to her godmother, however in her own right she is a superb artist. She rightly deserves credit for producing what is one of the best albums I have heard for years. Melodic, soulful, heartfelt and showing immense maturity for someone still in her youth. If Dionne maintains this quality in her writing and singing she deserves every success that comes her way, and in herself is probably the greatest legacy to be left by the sad departure of Amy Winehouse.
