Product Description

Book Description

Shop efficiently and cook wisely using these 200 recipes and 7-day meal planners from Britain's best-selling cookery magazine

Product Description

The Good Food Family Meal Planner will help you to save time and money and reduce waste - three of our biggest and most timely concerns.

Most cookbooks are arranged around type of dish or ingredient, but this book is structured around 5 types of meal which will give you 7 days' worth of dishes. The first chapter covers batch meals, which will provide you with enough food for another day. Chapter 2 is full of speedy weekday supper recipes - quick-and-easy meals that can be made in under 20 minutes, but also include a significant leftover ingredient that will form the basis of the next day's meal.

Budget suppers use a smaller number of ingredients, while storecupboard and freezer meals are based on ingredients that you should have handy - meals you can create on short notice. Weekend feasts are more leisurely recipes, including ideas for entertaining, while the final chapter will offer over 25 seven-day meal plans based on the recipes in this book. And even if you don't follow a meal planner in its entirety, you can choose which meal is most appropriate for your needs.

Also included within each chapter are handy features on freezing and defrosting, creating a storecupboard of essential ingredients, making the most of seasonal flavours and recipes for breads, stocks and sauces.

This is the cookbook that every family needs, one that you will turn to week after week.

Outstanding book 11 Sep 2009

Having worn myself out (and emptied my purse) with great cooking ambitions by pouring over and trying to follow the ideas in the Gastronomy Economy book, I now realise that The Family Meal Planner is the real deal if you really want to want to plan meals, keep to a budget, make good use of your freezer, use your store cupboard and use up leftovers - but not unnecessarily over-complicate things. These recipes are cheap to make, using in the main wholesome ingredients. As with all the BBC Good Food books I have never had a failure, and I think this might be some way due to the fact that each recipe is triple tested.

There are six chapters:

Batch meals and instant dinners - gives you the option of cooking double and freezing the leftovers to eat when you are short of time. There are loads of one pot recipes. There is a lovely recipe for homemade frozen pea and potato soup, but my favorite was pan fried chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce.

Weekday suppers and leftover ideas - a really well thought out chapter, all the recipes take less than 30 minutes to cook and give you a leftover idea. These leftover ideas use either surplus raw ingredients or extra cooked rice, potatoes etc to cook the next meal.

Budget family dinners - this chapter really concentrates on inexpensive ingredients, hence I use this chapter the most. My favourite recipes are bacon and broccoli pasta and spiced carrot and lentil soup.

Freezer and storecupboard meals - a great chapter for ideas for reducing your fresh food bills. The hummus recipe is back to basics, and is so simple to make. Nothing chefy about it. I also really enjoyed the broad bean pilaf using frozen broad beans. The author isn't snobby about ingredients, there is even a recipe for tuna frozen potato wedges, because she realises that in the real world you sometimes can't plan ahead and need to feed your family as soon as possible with the minimum effort.

Weekend feasts

Recipes for times when you have more time to cook - my favourite recipe is chocolate pecan fondants using 50% cocoa solid chocolate. Not only is it delicious, it can be made a day ahead.

The last section has a comprehensive planner, you don't have to follow it but it does give you loads of ideas.

All the recipes are clearly indicated if they are suitable for freezing or not. I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone - it is easy to double or half each recipe.

Like many mothers, I work and have a young child. I want him to have a healthy diet and to eat home made meals, but with limited time in the evening this can be difficult. That was until I bought this book. Not only does this book have many meal ideas which are quick, healthy and use everyday ingredients but they also have meal planners at the back helping you with your shopping budget, for example if you need half a cabbage in a recipe, they put another recipe in for that week which will use the rest of the cabbage up, no waste. They also have meals which will create leftovers for a packed lunch for the next day or another meal for the next day. I certainly recommend this book, it has changed the way we eat.

The recipes: use normal ingredients, are easy to follow, and delicious. I've really enjoyed learning lots of new recipes that I can whip up quickly and with consistently great results. Even my husband has taken a keen interest - as we are following the meal plans, he knows what the recipe of the day is - and has turned into somewhat of a brilliant chef.

The meal plans: are fantastic and definitely well thought-through. We hardly ever (if ever) throw food away anymore because just the right amount is bought and used each week. There's a good combination of quick, "instant" meals for busy weekdays, and something different for the weekend that can also be made in batch for later in the week. I am eating a healthier, more varied diet and wasting less food, money and time.

This is the best - and most used - recipe book I know. Fantastic!!
