Exciting meals on a shoe string budget!,

This review is from: Good Food: 101 Budget Dishes: Triple-tested Recipes (Paperback)
As the previous reviewer, I too eagerly awaited this book. I own several of the GoodFood books and the 'Cheap Eats' is particularly a good buy as all of the ingredients are not only easy to get but cheap too. 'Budget Dishes' book is even better in that respect. I've only owned it for a week but already I've cooked a few recipes from it and I've already planned my meals for the next week from it!As I cook mainly for myself but love cooking, it's exciting being able to browse the book, not having to consider the possible prices of ingredients and how I will get them. Every recipe looks really tasty and quick and fun to make. What's even better is that a lot of the meals, despite being for 4 or more people, can be easily kept in the fridge over a couple of days, making cooking from this book even cheaper! I reccommend this book to anyone who cooks for themselves and enjoys cooking but is worried about how much they spend on their weekly food budget. Plus, if you're wanting to impress a few friends with your culinary skills, there is a whole section on entertaining on a budget, and the recipes are easy to do but still look really presentable.

I am slowly building up my collection of 101 Recipes books, and have not been disappointed with any. This one particularly has been useful in helping me find nourishing and interesting meals that are fairly cheap to produce. My only word of advice would be to have a nose through and make sure you have certain store cupboard staples in (i.e Fish sauce, vinegars, herbs etc) as having to buy in all the individual components for a particular meal doesn't make it that all that cheap! I have tried several recipes so far and they have all been tasty and enjoyed by my family. The recipes haven't needed tweaking like some I have tried. Definitely worth having in your collection!

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book to add to my collection of other BBC Good Food recipe books. I have never had a failure with any of the recipes and this book is no exception. There are six sections in the book: Feed the family for less Weeknight wonders Entertaining on a budget Money saving lunches and leftover ideas Thrifty soups and side dishes Value cakes, bakes and puddings There are loads of tips to accompany each recipe and each recipe has its own glossy photograph. All the recipes are designed with economy and healthy choices in mind; today I made good for you bolognese sauce using 1lb of mince, 2 courgettes, 4 carrots, mushrooms and gravy granules - I ended up with at least 6 to 8 portions, perfect for freezing. The recipes make good use of healthy convenience foods such as tomato pasta sauce, tinned lentils, tinned beans etc. A lot of the recipes use basic ingredients you probably already have in your cupboard and fridge. Today I made sticky chicken stir fry with sesame seeds - it was a big hit with my teenage children, it was great making a simple stirfry sauce from cupboard ingredients plus carrots, and I followed the recipe's recommendations and used turkey to reduce costs further. As a avid soup maker I am thrilled with the soup sections: how about leek, bacon and potato soup, onion soup, carrot and coriander soup, pumpkin soup, tomato and pesto soup? The tomato soup uses 3 cans of plum tomatoes - not expensive fresh ones. The bake section is good too; I have made plain unadorned chocolate cake using good old fashioned cocoa, nothing about "use 80% cocoa solids etc". The cake was light, moist and tasty.
