Product Description

When Peter Wright's father dies he leaves his entire fortune to Peter's best friend Jack. Over a few weeks in the summer of 1959 the consequences of the old man's legacy seriously affect three men s lives, Jack, who has brought up his three children alone since his wife was killed, Wright's solicitor Harry, who is trying to rebuild his relationship with his estranged son Guy, and Peter himself, whose friendship with Jack is threatened by his father's death and the terrible secrets he has kept since his return from the Japanese POW camps. The Good Father explores the nature of fatherhood and the bonds between fathers and their children in a gripping story of love, betrayal and adultery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous read from Ms Husband, 14 Dec 2007
By Book Group Reader (Northern England) - See all my reviews
Having read all of Husband's previous novels (she visited my reading group and is a very entertaining speaker) I went out and bought The Good Father as soon as it was published and I wasn't disapointed. Her writing is effortless to read and her characters very well drawn so that I found myself utterly caught up in the story. Set in a small English town in 1959, the plot has many twists and turns, but the main twist I didn't see coming at all and it left me astonished and wanting to read the novel again as soon as I'd finished to see how she misled me in such a pleasurable way. Everyone in my book group enjoyed this novel, it's pacy, interesting and subtle. We all wonder why this author isn't more widely known and acclaimed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, 28 Dec 2007
I received the book for Christmas and found it a great read. Not a book I would have picked myself but found I could not put it down once I had started it. What I liked about the book is its fast pace and how well the characters are interwoven and work so well as a group. The book captures the characters really well and in particular Peter and how he handles life after his return from the war. The book does not lie when it says it is a gripping story of love, betrayal and adultery. I would be interested in other peoples view on who they think the good father was? For me it would have to be Jack. Highly enjoyable - recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well paced and interesting, 14 May 2008
By NB (Middlesbrough, UK) - See all my reviews
I started this and wasn't sure if it was for me, but was gradually taken in due to the thickening plot and mysterious pointers placed that indicated a `big reveal'. I ended up guessing most of the twists, the way in which you can with a soap, but this isn't a bad thing, it just means it was easy to get into the flow of the plot.

Husband writes about the past in an engaging way, with just enough references to brands and clothing to put you in the right place, and her representation of social mores seemed accurate and true.

I found the sex scenes embarrassing, not for their harshness, but the fact they tended to slide into Mills and Boon territory at points, but hey, some people love that.

Although I wasn't swept away by it, it was an enjoyable, mostly well-written read.
