This set contains what is arguably the best cop drama ever filmed in Serpico. I won't go into the plot, surfice to say the film itself is outstanding with great performances and a look at 70s New York policing, which is none too comforting. The image quality is pretty excellent considering the age of the film, with only a bit of edge enhancement spoiling the view from time to time. The image is often composed of compelling sombre textures and the film has a filmic look, with celluloid grittiness well represented. There are some good extras on the disc and the sound and score is good, though it won't tax your speakers.
Narc is one of those little films that comes into being through the sheer will of the writer/director and the backing of a big name star, in this case Ray Liotta. (I believe Reservoir Dogs was birthed in a similar way, with Harvey Keitel providing star power.) It is a gritty cop film and this is built upon as the story progresses. There are some moments of brilliance here. The film looks good and the disc contains some good extras and it is worth paying attention to the featurette explaining how troubled this production was.
The Untouchables for me felt like the weakest film. I don't think it's aged particularly well, but that may be due to its higher profile and regular TV showings. I find it frustrating that despite being the standout performers, De Niro and Connery have relatively little screen time and the film feels a bit short for the subject matter. Costner's character is, at times particularly unlikeable, which doesn't help. The look of the film is somewhat over processed, making it look a bit too shiny and sharp for its own good and this is especially apparent when you watch the trailer which looks far more authentic and watchable. The sound is okay and there are some extras. I believe The Untouchables has been released again on DVD with more extras. If you're a fan of the film take a look at that.
The three discs are on a double fold with a card slider to keep it shut. If you've yet to see Serpico and Narc I don't think there are any differences between the discs here and those of the stand alone films, so you may as well get this if the price is right and you don't mind the packaging. Individually I'd rate Serpico 5*, Narc, 4*, and The Untouchables 3*.
