A Sad Story,

The fact that this disc is so expensive is a deterrent to the acquisition of an Original West End cast recording that will give much pleasure to devotees of both J B Priestley and British stage musicals. The score is a tribute to the way in which two Americans - and the adaptation by Ronald Harwood - have captured the enduring and endearing essence of the novel. Not all of the songs are as memorable as the poignant Darkest Before Dawn, beautifully sung by Dame Judi Dench, or the highly-engaging Footloose, in which she is joined by Sir John Mills and Christopher Gable, but overall this is a work which deserves a fully-staged professional revival using the orchestral parts recently refurbished by John Wilson. It is to be hoped that the disc, which emanates from the USA and has never, to my knowledge, been issued in a CD format in this country, will become available at a more attractive price.

I shall not(although I would like to) buy this CD,as the only copy is for sale at £77.59!!!
This is really to correct the above review here. The music for "The Good Companions" is NOT by Andrew Lloyd Webber,but by Andre Previn,with lyrics by Johnny Mercer,and book by Ronald Harwood.

Superb musical of a superb novel!,

A unique recording with classic stage-stars John Mills and Judi Dench in the leading role. They are surprisingly good singers. Music by Lloyd Webber adds its own dimension. Well worth buying for Priestley buffs.
