3.0 out of 5 stars A Humorous Logical and Literary Critique of the Old Testament by an Agnostic Writer, 10 May 2009
By Professor Donald Mitchell "Jesus Makes Me a P... (Boston) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)

This book is more of a humorous memoir about reading a book than a non-fiction book about the Old Testament. I thought the content was mostly a self-absorbed yawn. But then, I've read the Old Testament many times in different translations.

In Good Book agnostic David Plotz reads the Old Testament for the first time and describes the parts he likes and doesn't like. Mr. Plotz usually doesn't approve of God's actions and reading the Old Testament doesn't increase his faith. He is pleasantly surprised to find that the Old Testament adds a lot to his understanding of language and literary references he's never appreciated. He is also surprised to find that Jewish traditions are often based on Biblical events that are different in detail than he previously understood to be the case.

Mr. Plotz is an entertaining writer and enjoys adding humor to his comments. As a result, many agnostics and atheists will find the book amusing. Jewish believers at best may find the book to be a kind of humorous off-topic rant by someone who misunderstands a lot of what he reads. Other Jewish believers may be uncomfortable with Mr. Plotz's observations about their religion. Some Christians will be interested to see how a non-observant Jewish person sees the Old Testament for the first time.

If your purpose in choosing this book is to learn about the Old Testament, I suggest you read the Old Testament instead along with a detailed Christian commentary. Reading this book is more like reading a satire of the Old Testament than learning from the real thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and eye opening, 26 Oct 2009
If you're looking for a book to help you religiously absorb the teachings of the old testament then this isn't it!

However, if you're interested in reading a book that looks at the old testament in a rather more real-world human way, finding humor, contradiction, injustice and flat out bigotry where it lies, then this is actually a very good read.

I actually listened to the Audiobook version of David's book, which the author himself reads with his usual dry wit. It's both funny and disturbing all at once, highlighting for me some of the absurdities of this age old religious text which has so mercilessly been abused over the years.
