Book Description

A unique user's guide to the prevention and treatment of back pain by Britain's own celebrity osteopath

Product Description

More than 60% of the UK's population report regular back pain with the amount of working time lost, in the region of 119 million days a year. Not everyone has the time - or money - to visit chiropractors or osteopaths. Barrie Savory is one of Britain's leading osteopaths and draws on his many years of research, teaching and practise to provide an easy to follow guide to how we can all protect our backs and, if the damage has already been done, treat injuries and prevent further strain.

Savory looks at the way in which we, as human beings, put our bodies through a series of potentially harmful positions as we go about our daily lives - from the way we get out of bed in the mornings, travel to work, sit at our desks, carry our shopping, watch TV - not to mention injuries through sex.

Full of advice on diet, exercise, posture and relaxation, this guide is also packed with exercises that can be performed safely and easily at home to treat strains and injuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A supremely practical and (surprisingly) entertaining users manual for your spine!, 25 May 2006
This review is from: The Good Back Guide (Paperback)
As a 6+ footer living in a small persons world and working at a laptop for the best part of my life, my back doesn't get the love it deserves and has an unfortunate habit of reminding me of my neglect on a monthly basis. Despite the fact that most of the remedies I seek work at least temporarily I was keen to learn some more about my spine to stop this constant annoyance.

This book did the job brilliantly and has actually helped me avoid a recurrence for 6 weeks and counting! I have changed the way I work, do the simple excercise regimes to break the tyranny of the laptop, and have actually become something of a pain to my work colleagues with my know-it-all commemnts about their postures. Above and beyond the obvious practical benefits, the author has managed to make the topic genuinely interesting and pretty much a page-turner. When you think about how important our back is to us, it is pretty amazing how little attention most of us give it. If you have any back issues - buy this book, if you don't - buy this book so you don't get any!!!

I went to Barrie some 20 years ago, and have been back occasionally with neck and back issues: he really is exceptionally good. Great self-help book

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much good if you are actually in pain, 29 Sep 2011

Dave (Poole, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Good Back Guide (Paperback)
The testimonial from Sean Connery on the front cover should really have been a warning for the rest of the book. "Barrie's sure touch quickly puts me right". In fact parts of this book read more like an advert for the author's osteopathy clinic. There's very little info on pain relief beyond taking pain killers. It's also aimed mainly at people in sitting jobs. If you have a sports injury or an active job then I'm not sure what you'll get out of it.

The author's evolutionary theory is interesting enough and the book well written, and I got through it fairly quickly. But this book is more about prevention & understanding the problem than cure. I think the idea is you read this book, realise all the things you did wrong and then ring up Barrie for an appointment to fix it. Or maybe it's something for him to sell as an "aftercare" product when someone sees him? I don't know, but it's disappointing.

Why does a book about back pain start providing advice about how to bring up a baby? It's totally irrelevant and not really appropriate. Once you've waded through the pointless BS the author finally gives a selection of exercises you can do to maintain your back. They don't seem to be aimed at relieving pain. Also, If you are already fairly fit, I don't think these are going to do much.

I also read and prefer "The back sufferers' Pocket Guide" (which is based on the Back Sufferers' Bible) by Sarah Key. I would perhaps suggest buying the full "bible" version as the pocket guide is very short and assumes you have read the bible version. This is aimed at both prevention and cure and gives you a number of exercises that worked for me fairly instantly.
