Biography

Tunng: always different, always the same. The band we meet, gathered in a cosy room in a Dutch barge on the Thames, are here to talk about a record that is dramatically different to any of their previous three. It's got a new lyricist and a new lead vocalist. It's got drums. It's got synthesizers. It's got massed singalong choruses. It's got guitar solos. And rather noticeably it hasn't got… Read more in Amazon's Tunng Store

Product Description

BBC Review

There is something comforting yet mysteriously unsettling about Tunng. The so-called folktronica sextet have an unnerving knack of leading listeners across a make believe Escher-esque landscape, at the same time nonsensical yet strangely familiar. For their first outing as a fully formed 'band', album number three, Good Arrows, sees the collective continue along the sparse acoustic guitar/velvety vocal route but with a marked leaning to electronica.

The product of a merger in 2003 between Mike Lindsay's techtronics and singer songwriter Sam Genders' musical endeavours, four years on, Tunng have perfected the craft of mixing acoustic folk with electronic sound-scapes. Like a series of fragmented snapshot memories, Good Arrows proves it is possible to create beautiful music by merging two, on the surface of things, incongruous genres.

The chiming 'Take' marks the beginning of an album that runs a million miles from clockwork. A track instantly ear-pricking, the 'all eyes ablaze, he saw her in the old light' motif punctuated by timeless grandfather clock strikes, is magical and engulfing. 'Soup' is all Thom Yorke and Four Tet experimentalism before unexpected rock guitar bursts onto the scene - a strange direction for a folk troupe but one that works, proof (if ever were needed) that Tunng delight in catching the listener off guard.

Single 'Bricks' exudes pop catchiness, but it is the marching 'Bullets' that is the true stand out track. With a chorus capable of causing the kind of stomach somersaults brought on by spotting the person you love in the distance, it is one of those wonderful songs that manages to sound happy and sad at the same time. 'Secrets' with its pinched and pulled time signatures and electronically treated mandolin/dulcimer has a dreamy waywardness, while 'String' uses a guitar motif not dissimilar to Sting's 'Shape Of My Heart'.

Advocates of fringe musical experimentation, Tunng challenge the concept of what a band should 'be' and sound like. Often lyrically incomprehensible, their electronic- acoustic folk is always beguiling - Salvador Dali set to music if such a thing were possible. We're not expected to understand, only to accept that music doesn't always have to have an obvious meaning - it's ok to enjoy the nonsensical. --Gemma Padley

GOOD ARROWS is a formidable collection of songs, and could well be a contender for the finest LP of 2007 thus far!

All of Tunng's vital ingredients are here - menacing vocal harmonies, rustic guitar picking, crackly samples and glitchy beats. This LP, like their previous two, is permeated with a decidedly dark and sinister edge (just check out the lyrics to "Hands" - the words will haunt you in the most delicious manner!) However, to counteract this darkness the music is buffed up and shiny and wonderfully melodic. Tunng's poppiest album to date? OH YES!

"Good Arrows" will compel you to finger pop and hum along to its endlessly catchy numbers. It is frighteningly consistent and also very, very unique. "Folktronica"? Hardly. This is timeless folk-pop.

Just listen to the awesome piano-fuelled "Bullets" (my current favourite). In an ideal world, this tune would be number 1 in the hit parade! It really is a remarkable pop tune and indicative of the fact that this band deserves more recognition.

If you are unfamiliar with the mighty Tunng, I strongly urge you to purchase this LP (and indeed their previous 2 albums - both highly palatable). Believe me, after a few listens your "tunng" will be hanging out and you'll be desperate for more!

Spellbinding ! 5 July 2008
By Arthur Dooley VINE™ VOICE

After 'Comments of the inner Chorus' London Nu-Folk ensemble Tunng provide another slice of new age mellowness and bliss which lifts the spirits and drives away the demons.
Some critics have argued that Tunng's use of electronic wizardry and the production vales are over-cooked. I'm not sure where these mood hoovers are coming from ? We are not talking The Wurzels 1978. This is a 21st century new age folk band who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is normally considered folk music.
I'm not sure Good Arrows quite matches 'Comments' but it's certainly runs it close.

London nu-folkers? Not a patch on Mumford and Sons, altho inevitably better than the dire Noah and the Wail. Sub-Belle and Sebastian. No real singers and no great harmonies. Early days maybe. At times listenable.

What stands out is the production - the clarity is superb, the separation of sounds outstanding. And the band's use of musical theatricalities is a treat , althogh not done as well as the great Jackie Leven. Unfortunately this doesnt rescue what is frankly a rather dull and unoriginal album.

Delightfully Different
Whatever way you look at it, this album is a little different. More "mainstream" than some of Tunngs other work, but still eccentric enough to be different. Read more

Tunng in Cheek?
A haunting and intellegent album which kind of sneaks under your skin. Manages to sound very fresh and modern while having a folk soul. Read more
