Synopsis

Reformed bad boy actor Charlie Sheen shines in this winning romantic comedy that plays with ideas of gender difference. Sheen plays a suave stockbroker named Ryan Turner, who loses his job suddenly due to one very bad decision. Unemployed and bored, Turner secretly begins to write his ex-girlfriend's (the lovely Denise Richards) popular advice column. Though crass and insensitive at first, Ryan slowly begins to empathize with the women writing into the column. His new sensitivity not only wins him a new job, but also the heart of the gorgeous newspaper publisher (Angie Harmon).

4.0 out of 5 stars What women read, 27 Feb 2005
By Francisco "hifranc" (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Ryan is a womanising stock broker who's not above a little insider trading. A business deal goes wrong and he falls back on his girlfriend. Cindy is a ditzy advice columnist who probably was a beauty school dropout. Cindy's no-nonsense boss was about to fire her and Cindy gets tired of Ryan cluttering up the place and heads off to Brazil.

Ryan tells the Editor that Cindy is ill and will write her advice column from home. After he shows that he's less sensitive than Cindy in his advice, he takes advice from people and does research. The attraction grows between the Editor (sorry I've forgotten her name) and Ryan but, as he's technically seeing Cindy still, she feels guilty about it.

After we get over the initial setup, the film feels much like What Women Want. In some ways the film is more serious (especially when it comes to dealing with sensitive issues) but it is, also, a lot sillier in other places.

The start of the film, especially the idea that the Editor in question would hire anybody like Cindy as an advice columnist, does stretch creditibility, but it's quite good once it gets going.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good advice is a chick flick with a Charile Sheen difference, 16 Jun 2002
The story is that charile sheens character is a stock broker and a bit og a git. He is sleeping with some blokes wife so the bloke gets even and sheen loses his job. Soon after his girlfriend (Denise Richards) leaves him to move to Brazil.
So he takes her job as an advice colulmist. After some ups and downs it becomes very popular and Sheen falls for his gorgeous publisher. A very effective romantic comedy for girls that even a guy will like.
