There are a couple of good ingredients here - pace, a skilled and multi-lingual heroine (Jay McCaulay), a south-eastern European setting for parts of the book, vicious Mafia types and human trafficking issues.
But what we don't have here is a great deal of depth in the story as we follow Jay trying to find and rescue a young friend from her past. It all moves along very predictably, with Carver using a great deal of licence, I must say.
Yes, the book will have you turning the pages but it will otherwise fail to challenge the reader too much. 7/10
