3.0 out of 5 stars A story of overcoming stereotypes while growing up-wonderful, 8 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This autobiogrphical novel is based around the childhood of "le gone" Azouz who lives with his extended family in a rundown shanty-town with his extended family. Exploring many themes which remain controversial and relevant today, the story is told through the eyes of a nine year old boy, who struggles to overcome the stereotypes and expectations surrounding his background to succeed in school.

The book is well-written, and easily readable. Begag successfully combines the struggle of the child to be socially accepted, to progress in school, and to understand the mystery of girls! But throughout the novel is an underlying sense of humour which makes this book recommendable to anyone, even if at first glance it does not immediately appeal.

The standard of French used is suitable for those of A-level standard or above, although some knowledge of colloquial french is required.

Overall however, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
