Daisy Dalrymple has been asked to help an old school friend - Sybil works for an author and lives in the same house as the author and his family in Derbyshire. Sybil thinks there is something sinister going on but can't put her finger on what. Daisy arrives at the house on a foggy day to find that they do not have electricity and everywhere is lit by oil lamps or candles. There is an ill assorted party of family members and guests staying there and there are plenty of tensions and under-currents to keep Daisy busy.
When Humphrey Birtwhistle is found dead by his wife, Daisy finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. The local police force soon calls in Scotland Yard partly because of Daisy's presence and her husband, Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher arrives on the overnight train to take charge of the case. Just about everyone in the house had a motive and possibly the means and opportunity to commit the murder and Alec, ably assisted by Tom Tring and Eddie Piper, have to try and find out who did it.
I really enjoyed this latest episode in the Daisy Dalrymple series. The characters are believable and interesting and the background - in this case Derbyshire - is well drawn. I failed completely to work out who the murderer was though of course the clues are there when you look back at the story. This is a well written mystery which could be read as a standalone story but it is interesting to follow the development of the series characters by reading the books in the right order.
