Book Description

The 20th and very latest Daisy Darymple adventure!

Product Description

Daisy's hot on the trail of a murdered writer!September 1926, and Daisy's in Derbyshire, visiting an old school friend who's currently employed by a novelist as his personal secretary. Sylvia Richmond has asked Daisy to investigate discreetly as she suspects something is seriously amiss with him.

Upon arrival, Daisy finds a household of relatives and friends all living off the hospitality of Humphrey Birtwhistle who has been supporting them through his pseudonymous Western sales. When he took ill a while back Sylvia carried on penning the books, only to find that her versions led to an increase in sales and advances. And now she fears someone in the house is poisoning Birtwhistle to keep him ill and keep Sylvia writing the better paid versions.

Before Daisy can even begin a bit of decent investigating however, Birtwhistle dies under suspicious circumstances - and Daisy now faces a death to untangle with a household of suspects... and a husband who is less pleased to find his wife in the centre of a murder investigation!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff 18 Dec 2012
By Graham R. Hill VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very fine addition to the series. Who knows how accurate the descriptions of time and place are, but they're evocative. Dunn has always had a nice - if cliched - eye for character. One word of advice though - she should give up on the Irish characters. Not for the first time the words placed in the mouth of the one here are beyond caricature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cowboys and murderers 15 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very novel background with a complex home dynamic to the deceased and his family. I think one of the great strengths to this book was the demonstration of how a great tragedy can affect people, and how some people can rise to the occasion and grow as personalities. The changes wrought on the family is excellently handled with Carola Dunn's usual light touch, and as always the interactions between her characters are delightful, and draw the reader in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 23 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book was a very good read as are all the Daisy Dalrymple Mysteries. I love the story line eg how the mystery unfolds, as well as seeing how the relationship between Daisy and her husband The Chief Inspector develops. Cannot wait to read the next one in the series. Well done Amazon for bring the series to Kindle at very reasonable prices.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasures... 23 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Some reviewers of the Mummy porn "grey" series have noted that a Kindle is the best medium to read guilty pleasures. The Daisy Dalrymple series fits the bill here, not as mummy porn-perish the thought, but in the world of (allegedly) golden age country house mysteries. This series makes the average "cosy" seem "hard-boiled"! They are simply preposterous, cliche ridden, with plot holes you could drive your taximeter cabriolet through and still leave room for an army of rustic "ooh-aring" forelock tugging lower orders on each side...however, having taken the first one cheap on kindle, I became hooked and via library and charity shop have read more than half of the series and will hunt down the rest (although not at kindle full price) to guiltily enjoy the exploits of the Hon. Daisy. I can't explain the appeal, I just like them. If this helps to intrigue you, the first three in the series were available on kindle recently as an omnibus quite cheaply. Go on, on kindle no-one can see that it's not some snooty booker literary author that you have to pretend to like...

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous 10 Mar 2012
By joma
I loved this book, as I did the other 19. The characters are well written and enjoyable. The story flows well, and the authors descriptive powers are amazing. You can lose yourself in the story and feel as if you are standing right beside the characters. LOVE the Daisy Dalrymple books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite so good 4 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been a bit disappointed by this book. The plot is a bit contrived but as I have a chapter still to finish - too tired last night - maybe I will revise my opinion but it does not start well.
