Questioning his sanity at times and often stepping out of his comfort zone, Dom Giles discovers a lot about the world, a little about himself and almost nothing about his motorcycle! This travel escapade is vividly described, packed with snippets of fascinating history and full of humorous anecdotes. Dom's stints of volunteer work add a novel twist to his tale as he learns to hunt for turtle eggs, contributes to a unique scientific discovery in Costa Rica and attempts to introduce Lewis Carroll into the lives of young South Africans in a township school. He is constantly touched by the kindness of others in this insightful, self-deprecating and life-affirming story of what it's like to be out there on the road.
Dom Giles was born in Lancashire in 1968, grew up on the island of Jersey, and then studied for a degree in History and Philosophy in London, graduating in 1990.
Not sure what to do next he took a gap year ending up in Israel just as the first gulf war broke out in 1991. Six months later he returned to the UK to train as a History teacher.
After teaching in London for two years Dom decided to combine his passion for travelling and teaching and went to work in Argentina. In Buenos Aires he bought a motorcycle and spent the summer travelling around Patagonia. This three month solo motorcycle trip instilled in him a desire to undertake a longer journey - a dream he managed to achieve some fifteen years later.
In-between he taught History in the Falkland Islands, Colombia, Ethiopia, Dubai and the UK.
But ordinary people CAN accomplish extraordinary things and in 2010, Dom Giles was determined to break out of the rat race and do just that. He gave up his job as a History teacher to follow his dream: to explore the world from the seat of a motorcycle and try and make a positive difference as he went along.
Questioning his sanity at times and often stepping out of his comfort zone, Jupiter's Traveller, Giles discovers a lot about the world, a little about himself and almost nothing about his motorcycle!
He is married to Tracy who accompanied him on part of his trip.
Gone Riding is his first book.
