Book Description

3 Jan 2007 Diary

Jean Ure returns with more warmth and wit in a brilliant book about what happens when two girls decide to run away from home.

Fourteen-year-old Jade is fed up with fighting with her mum and step-dad, and her shy sixteen-year-old friend Honey is having a miserable time with her mum, but when Jade decides they should both run away, Honey isn't so sure.

It's only when they get to London and things don't work out quite how they expected that Honey shows she has hidden depths, and Jade realises that home is not so bad after all…

More About the Author

Jean Ure has been writing for almost as long as she can remember. She had her first book published while she was still at school and has been writing ever since.

Over the years she has tried her hand at many different genres, sometimes through necessity, sometimes to fulfil a commission, sometimes for the sheer fun of experimenting; but the genre in which she is most at home is the genre in which she started out, which would no doubt be pigeon-holed in that dull and stodgy-sounding category, Social Realism. Her books, however, are far from either dull or stodgy. They are essentially books about young people, her protagonists typically being somewhere between the ages of ten and fourteen. Many have serious themes, even, in the case of BECKY BANANAS, tragic; others are more light-hearted. But all are written with warmth and humour and a lightness of touch which can entice even the most reluctant of readers whilst still providing food for thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good story, well told 11 Jan 2007
Jean Ure is a good storyteller without ever becoming predictable or following a formula. In this story Jade and Honey decide to leave home and they encounter the inevitable anxities and insecurities of being alone. But it is encouraging that a most unlikely 'hero' comes to their rescue and that the end of the story combines a feelgood return on the one hand with a break for freedom on the other. The characters in this book are all believable and the illustrations, as with all of Karen Donnelly's are wonderfully observant. The body language in the drawing on on page fifty is perfect! A throughly good read with a pace that is maintained right to the end. Highly recommended!
