This continues the bitter confrontation between drug-cartel leader Manuel Perrine and detective Michael Bennett. Perrine is hell-bent on extending his drug empire using ruthless paramilitary-style violent operations both in the USA and Mexico. He also seems to have other covert motives. Meanwhile, Michael Bennett has a multimillion dollar bounty on himself and his family of 10 children posted by the vengeful Perrine. They have been holed-up in a remote Northern Californian location under a witness protection programme for 8 months. Perrine's activities become a national threat and Bennett is brought back into the hunt teaming up with FBI agent Emily Parker, leaving his family exposed and in danger.

The events that follow contain plenty of action and thrills and the build up to the inevitable ending has it's exciting and suspenseful moments. The overall plot is fairly predictable with a few surprises usually conjured up by Perrine. It is an easy read with the usual short chapter format and blank spaces. Parker's presence is welcome as we learn little more about Bennett who continues to be an amiable committed cop and family man. Nanny Mary McCarthy is a joyous character. A chunk of the novel focuses on the family in their hideaway and becomes repetitious in between the real conflict and personal determined intrigue between the two main protagonists that contain the gripping exploits.

An enjoyable adventurous read from James Patterson and co-author Michael Ledwidge. Shorter in real terms than the stated number of pages.

This was not up to the usual Patterson standard. The plot was ridiculous and the conclusion was as though the author got bored writing it and wanted to get on with something else. A waste of money!

A follow-up from “I, Michael Bennett”, and yes, I would recommend you read episode 5 before starting “Gone”. The story features Bennett and his large entourage of a family are hiding out in a remote farm, away from the drug baron who wants revenge. Typical with Patterson, the prose is simple and quick which makes this an easy and absorbing read. There is nothing too clever, without the twists we can expect from Deaver or Coben, but is enjoyable nevertheless. The ending is very predictable such that you wonder how clever Patterson must be to make a simple story so riveting.

There is very little I dislike about James Patterson's work. Sometimes I enjoy his collaborations and sometimes not. Michael Bennett is a very readable character, not as charismatic as Alex Cross but there haven't been as many books about Mr. Bennett as yet. The story moves well and, as with all of James Patterson's novels, I find myself hooked early on and then tend to read faster and faster to get to the end, which is quite ridiculous because once it's finished I have to wait until the next book! Well worth reading.
