Product Description

Product Description
In their thought-provoking analysis, Francis and Richter provide a detailed account of the different reasons behind church leaving. They also identify how some church leavers can be converted more easily than others into becoming church returners. The authors look at why many people are disillusioned with the church, while for others questions are around matters of teaching, style of worship or incompatibility of lifestyle. For others, the costs of being involved in the church are too high, for others there are issues about change or lack of it. Leslie Francis and Philip Richter have evaluated over 700 telephone interviews and more than 900 questionnaires completed by people who have left churches of different Christian denominations. They provide powerful and authoritative insights into what church leavers really think about the church and into who is likely to return and who is likely to stay away.

About the Author
Leslie J Francis is an Anglican priest and Professor of Practical Theology at the University of Wales, Bangor. Philip Richter is a Methodist minister and Director of Education at the Southern Theological Education Scheme (STETS).

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful analysis for anyone interested in church growth, 12 May 2009
By Jorj Kowszun "Reader Jorj" (Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Gone for Good" is a report on follow-up research to an earlier analysis "Gone but not Forgotten". After describing their research methods in great detail, the authors go on to provide an analysis of their findings about the reasons people give for leaving Christian churches into fifteen categories, each with three or four themes. For each of the categories they provide detailed information about gender, age and denominational factors. They tell us whether the leavers are likely to go quickly or gradually and whether they are likely to return.

The authors take pains to point out that each person's story is individual and it is difficult to generalise. However, it is clear from their research that there are simpler patterns and it would have been helpful, perhaps, to group the categories by the degree to which it is possible to redress the causes of leaving.

The book requires some careful reading and further processing, depending on your specific needs. However, it is a very good resource and is the most incisive piece of research currently available on the reasons for church leaving in England.
