Amazon.co.uk Review

Even though there’s an increasing number of horror movies right now, not least ones with characters left open in unfamiliar surroundings (Wolf Creek, Hostel, Vacancy--and plenty more besides), it’s worth making some time in your life for Gone. It’s a small British film, shot in Australia, with a lot more bite than you’d expect it to have.

Here, the lead characters in question are a pair of in-love backpackers, who, while rambling across Australian desert, meet a stranger on their travels. Things, without giving too much away, escalate from there, but thanks to the wise restraint of first-time director Ringan Ledwidge, events in Gone are kept very taut and extremely tense. Eschewing gimmicks and gore, instead the film is very focused, perhaps a little unambitious, but nonetheless highly effective.

Ledwidge’s cast serve him very well, too. Shaun Evans and Amelia Warner are effective as the backpackers, but it’s Scott Mechlowicz stranger you’ll be talking about once Gone’s credits roll. That, and the superb photography, that delivers some wonderful frames from the terrific Australian scenery.

Some may find the relatively slow pace a little troubling, and there isn’t much in the way of surprise in Gone’s locker. But as a small, quietly effective little horror, you won’t feel cheated by it at all. --Jon Foster

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Hungarian ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Arabic ( Subtitles ), Danish ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), Finnish ( Subtitles ), Hungarian ( Subtitles ), Icelandic ( Subtitles ), Norwegian ( Subtitles ), Swedish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (2.35:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted Scenes, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: The Ringan Ledwidge-directed, Andrew Upton and James Watkins-scripted psychological thriller Gone (a U.S.-British-Australian co-production) follows in the footsteps of such shockers as The Company of Strangers and Kalifornia, as several innocent, unwitting young travelers inadvertently find themselves at the mercy of a psychotic outsider who poses as a Good Samaritan. The story unfolds in the Australian outback, with Alex (Shaun Evans) en route to visit his girlfriend Sophie (Amelia Warner) in Byron. His intended plans take an unexpected left turn, however, when he misses his bus and accepts the offered assistance of another traveler, the seemingly benign American Taylor (Scott Mechlowicz). The men agree to spend the evening together and partake in a night of drunken excess with several women, but the next morning, Taylor takes a potentially incriminating Polaroid of Alex in bed with one of the girls. He nonetheless assures Alex that he has destroyed it, which assuages Alex's fears temporarily. When the men decide to remain together and travel across the outback with Sophie and her friend Ingrid, however, signs of duplicitous and shady behavior emerge from Taylor - including his overt sexual interest in Sophie, the threatening resurgence of the Polaroid, and Ingrid's sudden, inexplicable disappearance. ...Gone

If you're looking for Wolf Creek part 2, forget it, because Wolf Creek it ain't. Ignore all the similarities you may read on here, a la Dead Calm/Wolf Creek, because to do that will not do the film justice.
The film is not trying to be either, in my opinion, but instead you have a very well acted psychological thriller - all 3 characters are believable, (i mean, why wouldn't you trust a handsome young american man?? He's not wielding a chainsaw afterall), and as the film progresses you see doubts raised about this person who is manipulative to say the least.
Take it for what it is, and no more, and you should not be disappointed.
Keep your eyes open for all three of the young actors, Shaun Evans, Amelia Warner and Scott Mechlowicz, as they are all destined for great things.

The Acting is very average! which has let down the film but the story is basic and I understand why this is very dissapointing for some people as you'd think its a horror thriller but No! dont be fooled as it is just a thriller with a love story behind it and a gasp of jealousy! I must say it is filmed in a beautiful place in Austrailia and it looks very cool! it dont get any better as the film follows through the plotlines! A really good for some! stable thriller all on level one,in other words it stays just the same feel throughout but there are No real violence and I think that was a bonus as this aint design as your violent survival horror thriller! I like the effort put into the plot to give the all important feel but it just is really a simple good film!

Think before buying!

I bout this film, simply because I'm a kid, and I dream of one day going to the Australian outback and feeling the experience. 'Gone' seemed like the perfect movie for me, because I love horror as well. In contrast, what I 'experienced' was about 5 minutes of 'outback action', and all the rest was just 3 people driving along, camping out on fields and beaches, and occasionally staying at an odd creepy Motel. Or so it seemed.

Some people have said it needs more "'umph', and more of a story, because all it actually is, is a boring psychological drama with only tiny suggestions of the killers actions; and, for about 70 minutes, the tension builds until a climax comes in which nothing really happens anyway." ... I saw the film in a different light.

Somehow, even though it was virtually the opposite of what I expected, I was still absolutely transfixed all the way through, and thought the climax was suitable and satisfying (if slightly blunt and cringe worthy)

If you watch the film with great intensity, there is a lot more to love than what comes off initially. I suggest that if you own it, watch it again and turn the volume right up, so you hear every word; I promise you the effect will be bettered.

On the other hand, this does admittedly involve some genuinely scary moments, mostly involving phones. Also, it disorientates you, like when the first blonde girl disappears, the characters do not look deep enough into the disappearance. And when the boyfriend just vanishes, his girlfriend just doesn't seem to mind. This is confusing as the sound track and the acting are fantastic.

'Gone' has all the elements to earn itself cult status, it's just not recognized enough to be popular. Unbelievably, too, the sequel is all written up and in for production next October. I don't know how they'll carry on this story faithfully, but we'll see...
