I first read this book when I was 9 or 10 and when I had children of my own I tried hard to buy a copy for them, but it has been out of print in England for many years and libraries found Enright unfashionable so got rid of their copies. Then we got the internet and there it was, still available in America. I found this book enchanting as a child and as I lived near a forest with lakes in it I always hoped I would find a hidden place deep within the trees. I still find the descriptions of the hot summer days and the dilapidated houses extremely evocative. In a sense nothing happens, but isn't that the magic of lazy August holidays? Reading 'Goneaway' for the first time in 30 years I found it had lost none of its charm and I am pleased to say my 11 year old daughter loved it too.

Gone-Away Lake and its sequel were my favorite books as a child, and I have also re-read them frequently over the years. I feel a kinship with the other people who have reviewed this book and love it as I do. I now have introduced it to my 8 year old son, and am so happy that he shares my love for this book. I love escaping to this gone-away place, and wish that I grew up in an era when children could safely wander, explore, and discover during the long lazy days of summer! How much more wonderful than today's summers filled with shopping malls, television, and Nintendo!

Great,
As a very fussy design engineer, I think this title is great. I enjoyed this title in 1963. If you don't like it - get a life.
