Product Description

Product Description

His mother is reviled as a whore, his half-brothers detest him and his employer wants to mess with him. It’s his last night as a shepherd in the hill country near Beth Lechem, but he doesn’t know it. He’s about to be recruited as a spy and his mother will be stoned by an angry mob.

Thus begins the story of David and Goliath as it probably was before the religious scribes got their hands on it. A tale of betrayal, love and impossible odds, not least when young David is pitched into an arena to fight a terrifying bull-headed colossus. An experience that will stand him in good stead when the Philistine army marches into Judah to threaten a disorganised Hebrew rabble.

Comments from Harper Collins’ site authonomy.com and the UK Arts Council funded youwriteon.com:

“A pacy story with a strong narrative flow and vivid characters”

“Wonderfully told, exciting and imaginative and a thundering good read”

“Deft period setting and dextrous weaving of significant moments”

5.0 out of 5 stars King David - spy, slave and angry youth, 27 May 2011
This review is from: Goliath (Kindle Edition)
Could the Bible hero King David have been other things in his early life before his rise to fame and fortune as King David? According to this book, he was a spy who got found out and had to fight giants in a Philistine arena. And could his mother have been mistaken for a whore and stoned by the mob, leaving him bitter and twisted?

I don't see why not - the Bible facts are scant and contradictory, so hats off to an author who perhaps risks the wrath of three great religions as well as Old Testament historians. Yet there's little doubt the author is something of a historian himself, as the book is full of facts and descriptions that ring true.

A gripping read, scary in parts, moving in others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could it have been like this?, 27 May 2011
This review is from: Goliath (Kindle Edition)
I don't know much about the Bible but I looked up the parts about David the Shepherd, with his sling, after reading this book on the old story. "Goliath" definitely fills in the gaps. And why not? It makes for a fast-paced, exciting story.

The author obviously knows the Bible well and, it seems, the country too. It transports you back 3000 years to what might have been. I particularly liked the realistic descriptions of the way people lived and they way war was waged. It makes the legend more understandable and I'd definitely like to read more about the unlikely hero David who thinks he is "chosen" by the gods (and the goddess for that matter).

Highly recommended.
