5.0 out of 5 stars Lots and lots of wisdom on these pages and a lot of chuckles 3 Mar 2014
By D. Blankenship - Published on
I have quite a few books whose subject matter deals exclusively with “golf sayings.” I have been collecting these books since I first started playing some 55 odd years ago. Of all the wonderful reading I have on my shelf; all the wisdom, humor and frustration documented in their pages concerning what is probably the greatest game every invented, this little work is most certainly in the exclusive top five I own.

The author has covered a lot of ground and taken quoted from wide range of people; from professional golfers, celebrities, writers, poets and sports figures.

“The pleasure I get from hitting the ball dead
center on the club is comparable to only to one or
two other pleasures that come to mind.”
Dinah Shore

The thing is, whether these saying are humorous or profound...they all, bar none are true. I found my self saying over and over again “good grief...that is so true,” and then with the next offering chuckling to myself.

“There is no movement in the golf swing so
difficult that it cannot be made even more difficult
by carful study and diligent practice.”
Thomas Boswell

I suppose that my primary attraction to this work is that here was not one saying; one quote that I could not identify with. I doubt seriously if any golfer would not identify with them. Even the most ridiculous offerings have more than a grain of truth to them.

“You know the old rule: He who has the
fastest cart nevr has to play a bad lie.”
Mickey Mantle

The book is well and uniquely illustrated and viewing the illustrations and pictures are sort of half the fun of this one. It is the sort of book that you can pick up over and over again; read a few pages and then contemplate the message.

“Golf is a puzzle without an answer.
I’ve played the game for 40 years and I still
haven’t the slightest idea how to play.”
Gary Player

This is an ideal gift to present any golfer for any occasion and is a great gift for any golfer to give to themselves at any time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golf art and witty sayings from around the world 3 Oct 2013
By Grady Harp - Published on
Bradford G. Wheler is a man of insight and concern for the human state - the durability of the arts, the importance of communication, and the value of humor. He began this series of art and quotes with books on horses, dogs, and great minds - each of which has become popular with both readers of serious fiction and lovers of art. He is the founder of and in that capacity he continues to marry history, art, books and the humor in man's nature.

In this book he has gleaned and collected and curated art work in all forms (photography, illustrations, paintings, collage, drawings) from 36 artists around the world, providing a platform for these artists ` exposure to the world outside their own sphere. He couples these with snappy sayings about golf from famous golfers (and would be golfers) that are at once hilarious, insightful, wise, and always entertaining.

In his approach to the world he is a Renaissance Man and we are the lucky recipients of his propensity for collecting and assembling bits and pieces of human behavior and responses and articulations from just about every corner of the globe (if globes only had corners!). Read this book, even if you don't know squat about golf. You'll be entertained and stimulated to gift your friends both within the inner circle of the golf game and those on the distant sidelines. Take the long walk with Bradford G. Wheler. Grady Harp, October 13

5.0 out of 5 stars A really clever book 3 Oct 2013
By Israel Drazin - Published on
This is a very funny, very witty 113 page book by the author of "Cat Sayings," "Horse Sayings," Dog Sayings," and "Snappy Sayings," as well as Eighteen 6/10/71 The Poetry of John G. Hunter III. It contains more than 200 clever remarks by many famous people about the game of golf. The book also features over 36 colorful and fascinating paintings and photographs from 36 artists from 10 different countries. Readers will enjoy the clever comments, such as Mark Twain's "Golf is a good walk spoiled"; Will Rogers' "A golfer is someone with hoof and mouth disease. He hoofs it all day and mouths it all night"; Dan Jenkins' "A good one iron shot is about as easy to come by as an understanding wife"; Chi-Chi Rodriguez' "Golf is the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off." There are also a host of thought-provoking statements, such as President Bill Clinton's "Golf is like life in a lot of ways: The most important competition is the one against yourself. All the biggest wounds are self-inflicted" and President George H. Bush's "It's amazing how many people beat you at golf now that you're no longer president."

5.0 out of 5 stars In one word - FUN 21 Oct 2013
By Alain B. Burrese - Published on
Even though I'm not a golfer, I really enjoyed "Golf Sayings: Wit & Wisdom of a Good Walk Spoiled" by Bradford G. Wheler. I like that he's helping get various art out to a wider audience, and I really liked a lot of the quotes, especially the first quote that is also part of the title, "Golf is a good walk spoiled." by Mark Twain.

The book is divided into different categories which include gold humor, frustration, presidential golf, the back 9, and more. All of the chapters have different pictures, some of which I really liked and others I didn't feel much one way or the other, but isn't that how art is? I do think there are quotes and pictures here for everyone.

The pictures are full color and the book includes short biographies of the artists and photographers as well as an index to the quotes. This book would make a great gift for any golfer on your list, as well as those like me who enjoy quotation books. In one word, it was fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some quotes so profound they could be used in a philosophy class 2 Oct 2013
By Charles Ashbacher - Published on
You do not have to be knowledgeable about golf to be amused by and even understand these quotes. They are first and foremost about life and how you deal with adversity and challenges. There is an old adage, "It is not whether you win or lose but how you play the game." As these quotes from people associated with the game of golf indicate, how you play the game will generally determine whether you win or lose.
Playing good golf is often a process of making a good shot in order to recover from a bad shot and keeping your emotions in check when a "simple" shot is all that is needed. I found myself smiling throughout my reading of this book, it is entertaining and yet profound enough to have some of the quotes used in a philosophy class.
