Review

'A warm and insightful guide...Sutherland's sense of enjoyment shines through, all the way to the most perfect of conclusions' (Herald)

'A marvellous romp...giving a pretty good idea of what golf on the islands is all about' (Telegraph)

'A great concept...vividly brings to life the courses and often idiosyncratic island life' (Scotland on Sunday)

'The most unusual round of golf in the world!' (Sunday Post)

'If you're a golf fan you'll find plenty of gold in Sutherlands descriptions of his exploits...the tales of the people he meets, the animals he avoids and the apparently endless appetite for CalMac breakfasts' (Buteman)

'Sutherland is very amiable company...a long distance from the stuffiness and snobbery of some golf writing, it's a refreshing and heartfelt journey' (Big Issue)

'You don't have to be an enthusiast to enjoy Gary's rounds of golf...an exceptionally well-written book' (Undiscovered Scotland)

'How refreshing it is to read a book about Golf which takes the reader miles away from the manicured greens of championship courses such as St. Andrews and Carnousitie' (Scots Magazine)

Book Description

No man is an island...but he can golf 18 of them if the mood strikes him.

This is one of those books where you just can't believe that someone hasn't thought of the idea before.
The author has set himself the task of playing golf on eighteen different Scottish Islands and the book follows his adventures as he travels around the various islands meeting the locals and experiencing the courses.
He's doing the journey as a tribute to his dad who has recently passed away and the memories and little bits of biography that are woven into the story are very moving and well written. I'm not much of a golfer and I enjoyed this book for it's jokes, warmth and positive, life-affirming story.

If you've ever swung a golf club or you just want to learn more about the islands of Scotland then this is the book for you.
Gary writes with a mixture/balance of great humour, fact and pathos. There are times you will laugh out loud, times where you may feel the need to wipe a tear and all the while you will learn a great deal about this wonderful country of ours and some of the great characters in it. A must read!

Just finished my most useful Christmas Present, Golf on the Rocks! Having been brought up on Shetland (They built a golf course on Whalsay since I left!)and now working in St Andrews running a golf hotel it was very refreshing to read a truly Scottish book on golf which misses out most of the "Trophy" courses, Machrie perhaps being the exception!
A fun read about the semi midlife crisis trip of the author to honour his recently deseased father by golfing around 18 island golf courses. I hope the islands are ready for the influx of middle aged golfers like myself that think this is a great idea....... great book, good read and a great idea for my own mid life crisis and cheaper than a porsche!

I bought this because I have been bagging Scottish island golf courses for some time and was interested to see how Gary got on. Words can't express the thrill of playing these courses (except Sannox of course!)and the beauty of most of the settings, golf at its very best! I have many stories to tell but Gary's humorous writing style and enthusiasm made this a really good read even if you've never experienced a Calmac full Scottish or Harris GC in the sun (and wind).

This book should be read by every golfer who thinks the latest Taylor Made Driver or the New Pro V1 are important. Hit an old Pinnacle into the wild, but beautiful islands and stand amazed at the scenery, whilst enjoying the banter from the locals. This book captures it all and I love it.

Captures the true essence of playing golf in the Islands. From rain to sun with some wind thrown in, and sometimes all in one round! Smiled when reading about the courses I play on! Great book whether you are a golfer or not. Worth reading!

My husband is a keen golfer and loves the Scottish islands, a big fan of the tv series Island Parish filmed in this area. So a combination of golf by an ordinary golf enthusiast in this setting proved a really enjoyable read for him.
