To be quite honest I don't see myself playing golf for real when I reach the retirement years. If I do then I can only picture myself trying to swing my club at the ball whilst underwater (water hazard), and then writing two shots on my scorecard for a par 3 hole when in actuality I played 55 shots. Oh well, there's always golfing video games. Here is the simply titled "Golf", an early release for the original
Game Boy.
There are two different courses to play on. The Japan course is the easier of the two. It's more suited to golf game novices, or for those who think "double bogey" means someone picking their nose twice in the space of a minute. The USA course is more of a challenge. This is for those who can comfortably get a below par score on Japan and are ready to go where the big boys play...and I'm not talking about WCW.
This is only a Game Boy game, but it's still impressive in terms of how much physical accuracy it contains. Take the clubs and surfaces. Wooden clubs are effective for tee-offs and fairway shots, but are completely useless in the bunkers. Meanwhile irons are good for obtaining moderate distance shots even when the ball is in the bunker or the rough (tall grass).
Wind also plays apart in the stroke play. Hit the ball while the wind is blowing to the right and it'll drift off to the right. Hit it while the wind is blowing in your face and it won't travel as far as normal. Take clubs, surfaces and wind all into account, and you've got a GB game that provides pleasantly welcoming strategy: Which club should I use? Should I play a slightly weaker shot to as to avoid rolling on into a water hazard?, etc.
Pretty good for the brain actually, isn't it? And there's a 2-Player option as well. Link up two GBs and you can tussle it out -or rather TEE it out- to see who the best golfer is the video games side of Luke Donald. But do bear in mind that the 2-Player option is not available if you're playing this game as a download from the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS.
In terms of retro golfing action, my favourite game is still
NES Open Tournament Golf which I reviewed a while back. But Golf is a cool golf game. Yes it's a Game Boy game, it's old and the sounds are robotic, but the older Game Boy fans will still get a buzz out of playing it. Just remember one thing: You don't have to wear your socks over your trousers while you're playing this game.
