Q School golfers live on a knife edge, hovering above the abyss of disaster and these stories capture their dilemma to perfection; this book does for Q School what Four-iron in the Soul did for caddies --GolfPunk Magazine

Product Description

Qualifying School, or Q School as it is more commonly called, is the end-of-season exam that only the lucky few - just over 3% of the field - will win the Tour Card that is the passport to a whole year of million pound prize funds. The seven journeyman golfers in this book include two players trying to emerge from the shadows of world famous fathers; one who suffered a freak injury and now faces bankruptcy; one who was predicted to be a millionaire before he was 25 and is still waiting; another who won fame on a TV golf show but no fortune; a former Tour champion whose career is at a crossroads; and a classic golf professional who still believes he is good enough to compete at the highest level. All they have to do is turn up at the most important tournament of their lives - Q School - and play great golf under the severest pressure of their lives. Ross Biddicombe has written and engrossing docu-drama bringing into stark relief Kipling's observation that in life and in sport the potential for triumph and tragedy is always present. This is sportswriting at its best.

I really enjoyed John Feinstein's books on the PGA Tour and Qualifying Schools, but GOLF ON THE EDGE takes the idea to a whole new dimension.

Instead of just reporting on who qualified and who didn't from the 2007 PGA Tour School, the author looks at the stories behind seven of the players involved in the process.

These are real people with mortgages and lives outside of the golf course like you and I. Tiger Woods is in one world, we all live in the other. And so do the likes of Sion Bebb and Andrew Raitt who aspire to be just like Tiger.

This is a magnificent book and one that will lead me to not just follow the careers of these seven players from now on, but also to take a look further down the leaderboard of all events on the European Tour.

In terms of birdies, pars and bogeys in golf books, this is a driver, 6-iron on the green and 20 foot putt for eagle.

I had been looking to get a book about European Q School for a while so when this came up i was delighted. Having read books on the PGA tour Q school i hoped this would offer a different angle. I was not dissapointed. This ranks up there with the best golf books i've ever read. All the main players featured have the same dream, but personal circumstances are all different. Those literally living a hand to mouth existence to pursue the dream to Club Pros with steady jobs and comfortable earnings putting it all on the line to make it to the tour. Unlike those players who fail to make it to the PGA tour in the U.S. but can still earn easy $200,000 on the nationwide tour, these guys know there is no such luxury. Fail at Q School with no job to fall back on and they will struggle. Quite simply a fantastic read, one which i struggled to put down. I found myself rooting for all the players featured and since i've read the book i've tried to follow their progress after 2007 such is the impact that reading their stories has had.
