5.0 out of 5 stars A Calix Worthy of Caesar! 25 Dec 2012
I'm not normally one for this type of memorabilia, but when I saw this I had to add it to an admittedly minuscule collection. And this will take the place of honor! The workmanship is outstanding, and while I am certainly no expert on pieces of this type, it has a substantial feel to it; when I pick it up there's nothing flimsy about it and one can feel and see the craftsmanship that went into it.

The engraved figures are extraordinarily detailed, and while the Imperial period isn't the era covered in my books, it is nevertheless one with which I'm very familiar, and I appreciate the authenticity of the figures represented on the Calix.

An additional very nice touch is the profile of the Emperor Vespasian (at least that's who I think it is!) looking down on the action below.

All in all I couldn't be happier with the Calix and what it represents. Truly Rome is eternal if even now people around the world are still interested in the Legions, and this Calix is a worthy representative of that time and place!

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to hold and behold 2 Mar 2013
This beaker is the most pleasing and delightful object. Not only does it look good but it also feels good. The engraving is beautiful and historically very accurate; the three panels are filled with so much detail that each time I look at them I notice something new. I had intended to have the beaker as an ornament but once I had felt its weight and had enjoyed the texture of the engraving as I gripped it, I was unable to put it on the mantelpiece. It has now become my every day drinking vessel and as such gets plenty of usage; every time I take a sip of wine I am delighted by the beaker's form and feel, it's a pleasure to hold. For me, however, there's an even more personal aspect to the beaker: above each panel is the head of Vespasian; so after a day spent writing the great man's story I sit back with a decent red and toast him and the II Augusta.
I highly recommend this for any enthusiast of ancient Rome and, as I live between London and Berlin, I'm seriously contemplating buying another so I don't have to keep carrying it around with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine detail and historically accurate 25 Aug 2012

I first heard of the Roma Victrix beaker through a friend, who had purchased one whilst on a visit to the British museum, it was on sale in the prestigious Grenville room shop, which is renowned for its high quality and historically accurate goods. As a student of Roman military history, (like myself), he was immediately taken by the fine detail, and the overall accuracy.
I contacted the makers website for further information and have since learned that it was modelled on a first century Calathus, called the Poseidon beaker, currently in the Yale University Art gallery. The detail on the beaker and the historical accuracy as a whole, is astounding, from the Scutem blazons, the bust of Vespasian, to the minuteness of the Centurions Phalerae. I have seen many pewter engravings in my time, but none with the same minute attention to detail, and none so finely worked.
On the maker's site was a link to Amazon, where I found the price was set at £52.00 below that of the British museum, (to the chagrin of my friend). I ordered immediately, the beaker arrived within two days.
To sum up: The makers have responded promptly and expertly to my enquiries, I do not hesitate to recommend this product, as to my mind, not only is it great value for money, but also, to endorse other reviewers comments, will one day become a collectors item. I only hope that this company will continue to produce these excellent products in other periods of military history.
