Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A re-release maybe inspired by the Safri Duo's success in the pop charts with "Played-a-Live (The Bongo Song)", this is clearly the proverbial game of two halves. The first features transcriptions that ease us into the duo's ravishing sound-world and remarkable virtuosity. Yet again it's Bach (and Bach-inspired Mendelssohn) whose music seems t he most naturally resilient in transcription--not least in Per Norgard's clever takes on Bach preludes in Well-tempered Percussionists. All but faithful to the original notation, Norgard nonetheless subtly seeks out new phrasing and the kaleidoscopic colourations the duo can offer. Friis and Savery's musical telepathy is stunning in all the transcriptions, but "part two" is yet more impressive. The three fully-fledged contemporary works may make more demands on the listener, but who cannot be haunted by the atmosphere of Africa which pervades Soren Barfoed's cunningly titled Safricana, a fabulous mixture of evocations of nature and tribal dance? Twine by Rolf Wallin is austere, concentrated stuff, focussed on a hypnotic exploration of rhythm and the varying timbres of wood. Finally comes the title track, Jacob ter Veldhuis' Goldrush. Suggestive of man's historic search for gold, it involves just about every piece of kit the duo possesses. The recorded sound is excellent. --Andrew Green

Generally unremarkable arrangements and originals for two percussionists 24 Nov 2007
By Christopher Culver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Before making a sudden change to pop music a few years back Safri Duo, the percussion team of Morten Friis and Uffe Savery, were one of the most important forces for new music in Denmark. This collection with them performing eight pieces was initially issued by Chandos in 1996, with a reissue coming in 2006.

I got the record as a Per Norgard completist. Norgard contributed an arrangement for percussion of 3 preludes from Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier". Except for adding a short introduction, Norgard did not change any of the pitches or rhythmical units. However, he did phrase the melodies in various ways. In the first prelude, the phrasing approaches the Golden Section, while in the second it produces a repeated refrain, and the third prelude highlights Bach's own rhythmic inventiveness.

The Norgard piece is a fairly minor addition to the composer's catalogue of works. The rest of the material on the disc is similarly unremarkable. The Safri Duo contributes their own arrangements of Bach, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Ravel, but I don't like classical-era material as it originally was, and the arrangements add nothing to it for me. Of the other composers here, Rolf Wallin's "Twine" is the most interesting. Wallin constructs his music from elaborate mathematical concepts, with fractals being his favourite, but the result is like Norgard's own ventures into self-similarity highly listenable.

If like me you are a Norgard completist, you can put this down at the bottom of your list. Thank goodness, then, that Chandos reissued the disc so it won't fall out of print too soon.
