Great headphones 27 May 2009
By Hinch
Coming from a Grado SR80, these are quite a step up from my previous headphones. They have great bass response, good dynamic range and are suitable for the type of music I listen to; rock, trance, dance.

They cannot produce that gut wrenching deep low end but it packs a punch where it counts. The overall sound is balanced and has a decent sound stage for music/games and movies alike. Listening to these, they kind of remind me of my old Porta Pro's but deliver a much more refined sound and are more comfortable over long periods of use.

I managed to get these for quite a decent price (less than the current £60+) and really can't complain.

The build quality is certainly reasonable but as with all plastics, they can creak whilst adjusting but once you're settled in for a session this disappears. The headphones are comfortable yet have a decent clamping force. I haven't had any trouble with 'hot ears' which I've had with previous headphones. The detachable cord is a feature normally seen on higher end headphones but on these is a 3.5mm connector mini-mini cable. It seems a good quality cable which will put up with a reasonable amount of abuse if connected to a portable player. I'm sure you could even upgrade the cable if you really wanted but then why would you at this price point - just get a better set of headphones!

Out of the packaging, they sounded quite harsh and overly bright to start off with and I had wondered whether I made the right choice. After a good few hours of burn-in, they've mellowed and are a very pleasant listen. Whilst they may not have the deep bass of some other headphones, they definitely have a presecence - Portishead and Leftfield are certainly acceptable thorugh these headphones.

I have an eclectic music library and found these have coped well with just about anything thrown at them. However, if you're a big dance fan and/or bass head then there are are probably better suited 'phones out there. If you like well controlled music though then I think these are hard to beat at this price point.

Goldring DR150 6 Mar 2010
I spent quite a long time looking into purchasing the right set of headphones for me.
I looked at a variety of different headphones originally ranging from bargain basement Sennheiser headphones like the HD201, HD202 (around £20), then deciding paying slightly more for the extra quality in Sennheiser's HD485's (£45) and HD555's (around £74) would be worth it for the extra quality in sound and comfort.

After doing some research on reviews externally from Amazon, I came across an article comparing the Goldring DR150's. They were being compared against Sennheisers HD555, of which I was previously almost set in mind in purchasing.

I'm glad I read this comparative review as I decided to purchase the DR150's (at £63).
I have never looked back. They are quality!

The comfort of the headphones is beyond what I was expecting.
The padding of the earpieces are a felt like material, so it does not stick to your skin or make your skin sweat after a good amount of time wearing them. The clamping is not too tight, and what with being a wearer of glasses, this was a pretty much one of the single most important factors for comfort.
They are also a very light set of phones, which is fairly deceptive of their size.

As open backed headphones, they do leak sound, so if other people are going to be in quite close proximity, these headphones could prove a burden (to those NOT wearing them), but the sound quality provided by these border-line budget headphones well exceeds their price! A purchase you will not regret.

I couldn't have hoped for my money to be better spent. A well worth purchase!

Stick with Sennheiser
All my other headphones are Sennheisers. I wear hearing aids, and the Sennheisers are large enough to cover the ear but not cause the aids to feed back. Read more
