Book Description

Jun 2006 Thorndike Paperback Bestsellers
Goldie Hawn is a born storyteller. In this candid and insightful book, she invites us to join her in a look back at the people, places and events that have shaped her life. It is the journey of a heart in search of enlightenment. With her trademark effervescent humour, Goldie tells us about the lessons she's learned and the wisdom she feels she's been given. Not a Hollywood 'tell-all', A Lotus Grows in the Mud is rather a very personal reflection on one woman's life: Goldie's delight in her father's spirited spontaneity; the confidence instilled in her by her mother; the unexpected gifts of comfort from strangers many miles from home; and the joy of being a daughter, a sister, a lover and a parent. This is Goldie's chance to talk about everything from anger and fear to love, compassion, integrity, friendship, the importance of family and the challenges of show business. Goldie writes about her younger self - the little girl who felt like an ugly duckling - and growing up in suburbia, dreaming of becoming a ballerina. She takes us on a tour through her go-go dancing years in 1960s New York, her phenomenal success on TV's Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in, and then to the world of Hollywood stardom and her extraordinary experiences in films like the Oscar-winning Cactus Flower, Swing Shift, and Private Benjamin. In A Lotus Grows in the Mud Goldie speaks of her relationship with her family - partner Kurt Russell, her children Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson and Wyatt Russell, and her stepson Boston - her growing faith, her curiosity about the future, and her unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding. Most of all, it is a trip back through a life well lived by a woman well loved.

Review

Goldie Hawn is no ordinary Hollywood actress and in her remarkable new autobiography, she tells the story of her life with self-deprecating wit and real emotional honesty (DAILY MAIL)

We learn a great deal about her early life, her family, friends and, most revealingly, the deeply spiritual side of her personality... [And] we glimpse the hidden depths of a decent and delightful human being (SUNDAY EXPRESS)

She went from playing a ditzy blonde to being a major Hollywood player. Now Goldie Hawn wants to use her own life story to help people find inner calm (THE TIMES)

Goldie Hawn seems to have it all: a perfect relationship, a decades-spanning career, looks that can light up a room even at 59. But as her new autobiography reveals, she didn't get this far by being just another dumb blonde (SUNDAY TELEGRAPH MAGAZINE)

Hollywood autobiographies are ten a penny, and that's what most of them are worth. Not so this excellent book by Goldie Hawn, who avoids the standard Tinseltown 'tell-all' to pen a personal reflection on her own life... A must-read book (SUNDAY EXPRESS MAGAZINE) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold Goldie 9 Jun 2005
By Chakra
Format:Hardcover
What a read! I don't know what I was expecting, but this book exceeded any expectations from beginning to end. A life rooted in family which appears little affected by hollywood. Wonderful sixties memories, humour, heartache and an obvious deep spirituality. A great actress, daughter, mother, lover and person, like I said pure gold.

I found this book quite by accident in a shop. I had been meaning to read it for ages, simply because I had heard rumors that Goldie was really quite spiritual and deeply philosophical. I was about eight when I first caught sight of Goldie Hawn on American's "Laugh-In" TV show. She played a ditsy, bumbling, super-giggling blonde who always flubbed her lines. Her eyes were huge and the deepest blue and she had a cute pixie haircut that all of the girls in my class wished they had. This book was a real surprise to me.

Goldie is not only gut-wrenchingly truthful in telling her stories, the book has a depth that I have not read in many autobiographies. One minute I was laughing with the stories of her mother or her father and the next minute, I was weepy over a story of some great truth she had learned through a sorrowful experience. She isn't just an actress telling stories of her life, she actually is able to probe into the deeper reasons that she did was she did and even her mistakes are laid out bare with the lessons she culled from her behavior. Not many people are willing to do that.

It's not only the experiences she shares that are witty or throught-provoking....the book co-written with Wendy Holden is really very well executed. It's rare that I find an autobiography that I don't want to end! This was one. The book is utterly delightful and you will never call Goldie a "ditsy blonde" again...she is quite the entrepreneur, the humanitarian...and the woman who will never take "no" for an answer. A lovely book about a lovely woman. You will laugh out loud in parts and grab a hankie, too. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected pleasure 7 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. This isn't just an autobiography, but a human journey which covers everything from siblings, parents, love, travel and loss. It is warm and thoughtful and her observations and articulate ponderings brought tears to my eyes several times as I compared Goldies stories to my own experiences. The book left me with the feeling that I had had a long and intimate conversation with a wise woman and I felt all the better for it.

You have seen the funny Goldie in movies, you have seen the serious side of her as an actress...now read about the real life woman. In all her glory, through ups and downs this bright and funny woman is honest in her reflections and makes no bones about the woman that she is. If you loved her as an actress....you will love her even more as an author.
