This video contains some of the best of the available film material on the English music-hall comics of the 1930s and '40s,
legendary stars such as
George Formby,
Arthur Askey,
Will Hay,
Max Miller,
the Crazy Gang and Frank Randle. Inevitably, we can only see what they chose to record on film, and it would have been professional suicide for a music hall comic to record his actual variety act on film - once he did that, he had no career left on the halls! In an age before television, a comic could tour a single act, largely unchanged, for 40 years.
((((Never change what works )))),
was the rule - which also meant no need for expensive new material!
This video, then, is not a record of the acts which these stars performed week in, week out, in the English music halls and variety theaters, but rather a selection of highlights from their films, and from the newsreels of the day - which covered the shows they gave as they toured the battle areas,
entertaining our troops in World War II.
