Book Description

Tanner Layne and Raquel Merrick fell in love young, hard and fast and both of them knew a beautiful life they thought would be forever.

Until Rocky left Layne, no explanation, no going back.

Layne escapes The ‘Burg only to come back years later because his ex-wife has hooked herself to the town jerk and Layne needs to make sure his sons get raised right. Layne manages to avoid Rocky but when Layne gets three bullets drilled into him while investigating a dirty cop, he can’t do that because Rocky stops avoiding Layne. They make a deal to work together to expose the dirty cop but they have no idea the strength of their enduring attraction or the sheer evil at work in The ‘Burg.

As Tanner Layne and Raquel Merrick play their game and dance around the pull that draws them together, Layne has to discover the dark secrets buried so deep in Rocky’s heart she doesn’t even know they’re there at the same time untangle a sinister web of crime so abhorrent it has to be stopped... at all costs.

And to do it, Layne has to enlist everyone, including his ex-CIA mentor, Rocky’s detective brother, the town’s unpredictable informant and Layne’s two teenage sons all the while stopping Rocky from doing something crazy and keeping their game secret so Layne won't get himself dead.

More About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

All Kristen has ever wanted to do was write (well, and be the Queen of the World, but you gotta start small). Somehow, she got into the charity biz and found another calling. She worked for the Rocky Mountain MS Center and the Colorado Neurological Institute before moving to England. Now she does both, working for The Pituitary Foundation in Bristol, UK by day, sitting at her computer typing out stories by night.

Kristen now lives in England and got there by way of Denver, where she lived for twelve years, but she grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Her Mom moved her and her brother and sister in with their grandparents when Kristen was six. Her grandparents had a daughter much younger than her Mom so they all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. Kristen grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers and REO Speedwagon (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

3.0 out of 5 stars lovely KA fix 7 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There are certain times in life when I NEED a Kristen Ashley fix. You know when life is hectic and crazy or you feeling a bit down and you just need a dose of hot alpha male to get you through. Well that is why I recently picked this one up and boy is Tanner Layne that fantasy fix.

Golden Trail is told in the third person but from Layne's POV which is unusual from a KA book. It was a bit weird for me at first as I kept expecting Rocky's voice to appear but I did eventually get used to it.

Now for those of you who have read KA before you know what you are getting. For those who haven't her books follow the same formula but it is a winning formula none the less. Boy meets girl, boy is demanding over the top hot alpha male, boy and girl have trouble, boy and girl have ever happy after and Golden Trail doesn't disappoint with this.

The Burg series is follows characters in their late 30's early 40's so there is history and baggage with each of them and in this book we meet up with characters from the two other books in this series. I loved Layne and Rocky and Layne's kids Tripp and Jasper are awesome. I would love to read their story, I think it would make a great spin off.

I enjoyed Golden Trail as I do all of Ms Ashley's books. So why am I only giving it threes stars? Well it was a little long and some of the story could have been trimmed for me. After such a big build up the ending was a bit rushed and a bit of a let-down and I would have loved to read some of the book from Rocky's POV. Still it is a definite read for KA fans out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the 'Burg books 23 Oct. 2013
By Deborah TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must admit even though I love Kristen's books it took me a while to get round to reading this one, I downloaded the sample and started it a few times but something just didn't gel I think it was because after For You and At Peace I expected this book to start with known characters (personally I was hoping for Mike) I eventually got over my snit and got round to actually reading it, once I'd got going I was hooked. I loved Layne but then who doesn't, I also really liked the Jasper/Keira romance and how we're kept in touch with all our favourite characters.
Value for money the 'Burg books have to be up there you just get so much in them, an excellent read.

I had initially overlooked this book as I read on some reviews that it is told entirely from the heroes POV. However, during a reading lull I decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did.

The book is told in third person from Tanner Layne's POV (likes to be known as Layne). Kristen Ashley is excellent at writing men. I thought Tate Jackson from Sweet Dreams was my favourite KA hero but Layne is on equal footing. I loved him.

What I found refreshing about this KA book is that Layne doesn't talk in the stilted way of most of KA's heroes. He also doesn't say 'babe' every two seconds nor 'babe, mouth'. Further in the story he does say 'eyes on me' but I think this only occurs twice. Yes he has a nickname for the heroine like most of KA's alpha males but the nickname in this book is not too annoying and not used constantly.

18 years ago Tanner Layne and Raquel 'Rocky' Merrick had been happy and in love until one day Rocky ended it and Layne never found out why. A week later and with her father not letting Layne speak to Rocky, he had got drunk and had sex with a girl called Gabrielle, who reminded him of Rocky. Six weeks later Gabby told him she was pregnant so they got married, had a son named Jasper and then another son called Tripp, but Layne was never happy because he still loved Rocky, so they split up and he spent a long time living away from his Sons, but moved back to 'the burg' when he found out his wife was living with a new man. Since being back in the burg he had not spoken to Rocky who was now married.

The book starts after Layne had been shot 3 times. He wakes in the hospital to see Rocky by his side and thinks he is dreaming. Once he is back home, she turns up and invites him to dinner at her fathers but he's not happy and tells her so.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want Tanner Layne! 6 Feb. 2013
By Tori
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Haven't got much to say really apart from I love it. From the action to the romance. I loved all the characters, the way Layne treats his kids and had a slight crush on his eldest son (in a 'awww he's just like his dad' way of course) I loved everything about it. Huge recommendations for this book xoxox

5.0 out of 5 stars Another 5 star read for me!! 27 July 2014
By Sue D
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Working my way through the Burg series and on to book 3 Layne and Rocky. At first I was slightly disappointed as I felt the story was going the same way as Colt and February in At Peace with the High school lovers being apart for so long etc. but the storyline built as well as the excitement till I just couldn't put the book down. Lots of crime in this friendly Burg but just loving this series and the way we catch up on all the other residents we have come to love. So very well written and again totally recommended, roll on book 4!!
