I must admit that I found the first book of this series a bit hard to get into. Having got past the disjointed start in The Many Coloured Land, as Julian May introduced the main human characters one by one, the story really comes alive with great development of both plot and characterisation. Aitken and Felice are particularly well portrayed in this second installment, with fantastic fireworks of mind power battles. The oddball group of characters have been split up, but each story thread is followed with vigour and the overall effect gives a real mixture of emotions as the different characters find life in the Pliocene age brings vastly different fortunes to each of them. I am really looking forward to see where the story goes from here.

A very unusual blend of Science Fiction and Fantasy that lovers of both genres should enjoy with equal enthusiasm.

I was very pleased to have The Golden Torc waiting for me on the shelf having read the first book in the series as the writing had me hooked from early on.

The Golden Torc continues the story but begins to pull at your emotional strings as the other sides view is examined in more detail, confusing your loyalties between the exiled characters. The Tanu and Firvulag races have been brilliantly created and as their culture and politics is explored the story continues to move along at a great pace.

The characterisation is wonderful with everything from hugely sympathetic if flawed characters through to the mad, evil and just downright nasty. Something for everyone!

The finale is enthralling and you will be desperately clawing for 'The Nonborn King' as soon as you finish the last page.

Enjoy this series as finding a story of this quality and an author of this talent is rare.
