Product Description

Album Description

* When Ace purchased the catalogue of noted San Francisco studio Golden State Recorders recently, foremost amongst the projects slated for release was a compendium of some of the compelling grooves laid down by Bay Area funkateers in the facility in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some items have already slipped out on BGP comps such as Superfunk, but with "We've Gotta Groove: Golden State Funk", we present a full-length celebration of the best funky soul to emanate from San Francisco in those years.

* Incredibly rare funk singles by the likes of the San Francisco TKOs, Windjammers, Love Experience and Mel Davis will no doubt catch the eye of the hard-core collector, but this highly listenable compilation can also boast that over half its contents are unreleased, with some red-hot sounds from the likes of 87th Off Broadway, 60s soul thrush Ramona King, future Janis Joplin sideman Snooky Flowers and the inimitable Wally Cox.

* Master tape sound, in-depth liner notes and some eye-popping pics complete the package. Regionally-focused funk comps have become an increasingly popular showcase for the obscure delights beloved of the afficianados, and "We've Gotta Groove: Golden State Funk" is one of the strongest to have come down the pike.

4.0 out of 5 stars (REVISED REVIEW): SOMETHING NOT RIGHT ABOUT THE SOUND...., 16 Aug 2010
By Syd - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Golden State Funk (Audio CD)

I am not an expert on how they master these cuts from vinyl, but I hear they use a software program to get the tics out, and if you go too far it reduces the `presence.' Or sometimes they use something called 'noiseshaping.' I do not know for sure. But maybe that is what happened here. This does not sound like all the other rare funk I have heard and enjoyed greatly so far. I have heard other Ace (which is usually great) and BGP, but the sound of this is different. A lot of these tracks are stereo, too, (unusual for rare funk) but it all sounds one dimensional, flat, a mile away and strangely mono. It all sounds so uniform, too. The jacket says `Sound Mastering LTD', and I checked others I have and they were o.k. Something is not right here. Maybe it was the particular guy who mastered this, but I think it all sounds strangely uniform...see Southern Funkin', same strange sound....(LATER) I have been listening to this again, and have raised the rating to four stars, because the music is so good and it is such an important release and I do not want to scare anyone. While I still hold this does not sound like the Jazz Man releases, Outta Sight, or New Orleans Funk, this is still really good, I deleted the word `dreadful' as a description of the sound quality. I like this...
