Singing the blues, SFA style,

The first single from the Furries' sixth album (Phantom Power) sees them as unpredictable as ever. Golden Retriever itself is a sub-2 min 30 slice of Furry blues, with delightfully odd lyrics about a thieving dog (or woman, or both) -- and one of their trademark guitar thrash-outs at the end. Not their best single, true, but a definite grower.You can always rely on SFA to come up with quality B-sides; and if the extra tracks here aren't quite as good as those from Rings Around The World's singles (where the B-sides were often better than the A-sides), they're still well worth a listen. Summer Snow is another short song, an uplifting stab at country music. Blue Fruit (written and sung by guitarist Bunf) is a pleasant enough ballad ending with 90 seconds of clattering noise. The production may be less glossy, but it's business as usual in Furryland. As they said a few years ago, check it out.

One of the great things about the Super Furry Animals is there ability to make short pop songs (around 2 minutes usually) yet fill them with so much energy, melody and groove that by the end you are completly satisfied. This is a classic example as the sinlge clocks in at no longer than 2 and a half minutes, grooves, funks and burrows into your brain with its insanly catchy tune, before leaving you reaching for the repeat button.Also available on a great DVD which offers you the brilliant b-sides the folky "blue fruit" and the great country style number "summer snow"(unbelievably both left of an album) and the great super furry video!
