‘If you like Philippa Gregory you’ll love this!’ Nora Roberts
Edward VIII became notorious for abandoning the throne for Mrs Simpson, but in the summer of 1911 he was a prince straight from the pages of a fairy-tale. Raised by the harsh disciplinarian King George V and his unfeeling Queen Mary, the prince longed for the warmth that had been deprived of him.
The high society Houghton girls' lives however, were full of fun, both at their magnificent family seat Snowberry, and at the whirlwind of glamorous parties which punctuated their lives. When a moment of serendipity brings Edward and Lily Houghton together, the pressures of a stuffy court are replaced with the lightness that Edward has dreamt of.
But a future monarch could not choose his own Queen, and even an enduring love might falter under the furious gaze of a King. Could the devotion of Edward and Lily triumph against him and the impending doom of World War I? Or would they bow to the inevitable and set in train events that could bring down the Crown, and change the course of history forever?

WOW! Someone send Prince William and Kate Middleton this book!,
By
This review is from: The Golden Prince (Paperback)
I love Rebecca Deans books, but I was really struck by the delicate parallels and poingent differences between this story of Edward Windsor (who later famously abdicated his throne to marry Wallis Simpson) and his first love, Lily Houghton. I had never before heard of this heartbreaking story of the Price of Wales, and found it fascinating to read about his teenage years which have not much been written about (unlike his years with Wallis Simpson). The Golden Prince powerfully exposes the enormous differences between royalty now and then. Will & Kate's marriage announcement gives this book a very exciting relevance and ramps up the romance. It's powerful to realise that their marriage would never have been allowed just a hundred years ago. As always with Rebecca Deans books I am easily transported in time and place, and this is why I love her, the historical details and believable characters pull you in from the very beginning. Within the first few chapters she has managed to make me feel that I know all the characters and I become emotionally invested in them from the outset. The other real delight with this book is of course the glamor. The palaces, the parties, the dresses! Royal state occasions are intimately exposed and scandal waits round every corner. The Women's Movement, protests, arrests and even Pankhurst herself! There's lots going on. A riotous delight! It's one of those books you'll be sad to finish. I can't wait for her next book - please hurry Rebecca!

Really enjoyed the flow of words in this book. The story tells around a family in the early 1900's and their connection to the royal family. Its beautifully written and a real page turner. A story of love.

Wonderful!,
This review is from: The Golden Prince (Paperback)
I can't understand why one reviewer has said this book was slow!? OK, it's not an action thriller, but I couldn't put it down. It's one of those books you read while walking between tube stops on the way to work. I fell in love with the the family of sisters and their home especially. I also found it a facinating story of Prince Edward's early life - I love royalty and had never read anything about this time in his life before - I thougth it thoroughly oringinal and well researched. I agree with another reviewer who comments on the parallels between Prince William and Kate Middleton and found it quite inspring to see how far the royal family has come since Prince Edward's time and present day. Beleivable characters, facinating historical detail and relevant storyline make this, for me, a wonderfull read which I highly recomend to anyone who enjoy's a well written historical romance novel.
