Product Description

Excavate 3 genuine golden nuggets just like a real treasure hunter with this incredible hands-on science kit! Buried inside the gold bar shaped digging brick you're young treasure hunter will think they hit the mother lode as they uncover 3 genuine pyrite specimens. Pyrite is also known as "fool's gold" because many of the miners that found this glistening mineral thought they had struck it rich! Do you think your friends can tell the difference? Or will these golden nuggets fool them as well? This hands-on dig kit includes an excavation tool, brush, magnifying glass, and a full-color information guide so that you can learn all about gold. The info guide was written by teachers and will teach you about gold mining, and the various uses of gold throughout history. Plus, there's an activity booklet with 10 fun games, puzzles, and challenges to complete. What a great way to start a rock and mineral collection. This is a must-have gift for the rock hound or treasure hunter in your house!

I bought this for my son as a christmas present, it didn't take him long to dig out the nuggets, disappointing cos there were only 3 nuggets to dig out but he said he liked it.

Eight year old had requested an excavation kit for Christmas, didn't mind whether it was gold, gems, dinosaurs or what to be dug up! He absolutely loved it. Tools included did the job well. I have given this 4 stars as the 'plaster of paris' seems much softer than it used to be, he managed the dig within an hour, so not quite the value it used to be.

Great Gift Idea 30 Oct 2012

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
My son has been interested in old prospecting stories, and I thought he would enjoy this gift. He loved being able to excavate the pyrite himself, and I thought the educational booklet was an added bonus. Highly recommended for kids interested in mining, gold, geology, and learning while having fun!

This is an excellent hands-on excavation kit that children will love ... 30 Oct 2012
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Everywhere we seem to look these days there are signs out saying "We Buy Gold." For centuries "gold has fascinated and tempted humans for thousands of years, and it still does today." There are all kinds of metals, but what is so special about it that keeps us wanting it? Dr. Cool has written a small Adventure Guide that will tell you about the properties of gold, its history, the California Gold Rush, mining towns, you'll learn about the uses for gold, what 24 karat gold means, gold mining, fool's gold (pyrite), and the modern day price of gold.

Dr. Cool has illustrated his booklet with loads of full color pictures. He's also got some "Cool Science Facts" for you to discover before or after you dig for your Fool's Gold or pyrite. For example, did you know that "A single ounce of gold can be beaten into a sheet so thin it covers 300 square feet (about twice the size of the average bedroom) and becomes transparent?" It's not only true, it's amazing. Along with your Adventure Guide there's an Activity Booklet with some "A-Maze-Ing" puzzles for you to work out.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

* A gold "bar" containing three nuggets of Fool's Gold (pyrite)

* 3 1/2" digging tool

* 2 3/4" magnifying glass (1" in diameter lens)

* 3 /12" brush

* An Activity Booklet with ten puzzles (crossword, hidden pictures, word search, dot-to-dot, a treasure chest maze, cryptogram, jumble, and a hidden image)

* An eleven page Adventure Guide to learn about gold

This is an excellent hands-on excavation kit that children will love. Of course it won't take long for any overly-enthusiastic youngster to dig out that "gold," but that's half the fun of it. What I like about it is that this kit has the educational element about it that I like. The Adventure Guide doesn't provide a lengthy history of gold, but is quite close to what I see in many curriculum-based books of it's nature. The layout is quite nice and very appealing. All in all, this is an excellent kit that could be used in the homeschool setting or just for fun ... a lot of it!

An excellent product for an older child. Got this for my grandson who is 7 and it was a little difficult for him. It turned out to be a family project . They had fun with it
Very misleading... to the point of false advertising ... no crystals 15 Jun 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
My son spent $13 of his saved-up allowance for this, and got 3 small rocks with nothing more than a few sparkles on them (have added a photo). No crystals, no nuggets, no clusters... nothing even close to what's shown in the pictures on the box. Seriously? You can buy full pyrite cubic crystals for $8. Will not trust a brand that deliberately misleads children.
