Product Description

Review

'I fell in love with Hymie Goldman within the first few pages. His story is funny, exciting and touching all at the same time. I found myself laughing and yet felt engrossed, and I have to admit that I allowed myself a breath of relief when I realised that as a detective Hymie Goldman has a lot to learn from Hercule Poirot.' -- David Suchet OBE 'If The Golden Pig is the first of the comic adventures of Hymie Goldman - Electrician turned Defective Detective I look forward to many more. A laugh a minute, farcical story and a great read.' E --June Whitfield CBE

More About the Author

The Penny Brothers - Mark and Jon - were born in the English Midlands, just a stone's throw from Shakespeare's home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. It's a pity they don't have his talent.

Both graduates, Mark in Law and Jon in Fine Art, they've travelled far and wide in their pursuit of a good joke and are determined to keep writing comic fiction for as long as it takes. "People have said all sorts of things about our writing but no one ever said we weren't funny" says Jon.

The Hymie Goldman novels are living proof that fiction's always stranger than fact, whatever they say. "I think we're getting better with each novel," added Mark. "If only we could keep going until we're 98, we might write a bestseller!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, I didn't stop laughing! 31 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
I was surprised how much fun this book was. I didn't expect it would suit me as it seems to be aimed at a younger audience. However there is something for everyone here, even if you don't normaly like detective stories.

Lots of laughs, action, and even a bit of crazy sex. An all round great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Side Splitting Stuff 14 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
Its a long time since a book made me laugh out loud , but I'm afraid I embarassed myself on more than one occasion by doing just this in a public place whilst reading this gripping and funny book

5.0 out of 5 stars humourous pulp 21 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is an unusual read, basically it's a fast paced, at times cartoon like, detective story with lots of gags. The humour is intense and slick, sometimes corny sometimes sophisticated.Honestly I recon if you don't laugh once you have no sense of humour.
The plot twists and turns but dosen't lead to pointless dead ends. It is kind of like Runyon but you genuinely won't have read anything like it before. At the end of it I felt like I had been entertained - which is not something a lot of authors care to do anymore. It may not be "High Brow" Art with a big A but it's got far more bang for your buck than a bucket of popcorn and some tinseltown fodder.
Yeah - definately worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest book I've read in ages! 15 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
If you're looking for a witty and entertaining read then this is it. The descriptions of the characters bring them alive and you are absorbed into a thrilling and amusing adventure. It is well written around a good story and is unusual in its arrangements of parts rather than chapters. It is a book born out of good humoured sibling rivalry which leaves you with no doubt that they must have enjoyed writing it as much as I enjoyed reading it. Can't wait for a sequel!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I anticipated this was going to be a better read than it was. I even bought it for a friend too. Would not recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Silly
It does read like a competition between two brothers, to outdo each other in silliness, which is what it is.the names are daft and the stories are contrived.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it.
Tedious in the extreme. It may be a whodunnit but its more of a 'who cares'. I didn't finish it which is rare for me I usually stick it to the end.

I enjoyed this book immensely and could not stop laughing. Not like anything you have ever read before, this is a completely new king of detective story.

2.0 out of 5 stars I agree with R.Frith
I thought this was a very amateur attempt at writing and couldn't be bothered to read the least quarter (of what is quite a slim volume). Read more

I bought this as 'light holiday reading', being in a pre-summer holiday rush, and obviously feeling a little light-headed. Read more
