Rare material at last available 5 April 2003
By Robert English - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
What few 78s I've been able to find of the Golden Gate Quartet from this period have been played to death; it is a joy to be able to hear this stuff without the scratches at last.
The remastering on these is uneven from track to track, depending probably on the quality of the source material (which is why it only gets four stars and not five), but not bad - it's all here, and very listenable from start to finish. The engineers who remastered this material did a very nice job.
Since this comprises their earliest sessions for Bluebird, their energy and vitality had a special kick of adrenalin that you don't hear so much on their later records. The later stuff is good, yes, but these early recordings are especially stirring.
For those who are hearing this material for the first time: these sides were never intended to be heard sequentially, and the repetitiveness from track to track can be mind-numbing if you try to listen to all of them at once. Listen to a few at a time, then come back for more when you're ready.
It is great to have all of these in my collection after so many years of looking!

Could not download the music sample after 5 tries .1/2 &stop 31 Aug. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Music samples on several albums only downloaded half and then hung up. There are 10 or so albums with the song we want. "Preacher and the Bear" and we wanted to get the one we liked best. Actually we were looking for a group called the BACK PORCH MAJORITY doing the Preacher and the Bear but you don't seem to have it.
