A well-played recital of very interesting music, some of it outstanding. Exactly what it is is harder to assert. Johann Gottlieb Goldberg (he of the Variations) studied with both Johann Sebastian and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, before dying in the year of Mozart's birth, having scarcely reached musical maturity. However, he learned to ape to the letter J.S.'s style, and one of the pieces performed here, the trio sonata in C major, was long thought to be by Bach. It's easily good enough, and many will recognise it. The other trio sonatas easily pass muster, though the largo that begins the C Minor trio sonata has, suspiciously, the same rhetorical rhythmic motif as the opening vivace of Handel's opus 3 B flat major concerto grosso no. 2. The slightest of them, the F minor, is claimed by protagonists of Quantz for their hero. If one can have a criticism of the music, it simply that it is anachronistic. Scholarship has not established a chronology for Goldberg's surviving works (he destroyed much of his output), but what is offered here can hardly antedate Bach's death. Included for variety are some rather slighter keyboard polonaises. The style is that of, not so much W.F., but C.P.E.Bach. They reflect J.S.'s influence to the extent of being in each of the major or minor keys. Notwithstanding the slight rubato employed, they don't sound to me like polonaises (no dainty syncopations).
