"The Gold Medal Collection" is a loving tribute to the memory of Harry Chapin and not just a traditional Greathest Hits album. You will find almost all of your favorite Harry Chapin songs included on this two-disc set--"Taxi," "Cat's in the Cradle," "A Better Place to Be," "W*O*L*D," "Mr. Tanner," "Corey's Coming," "The Rock"--along with Harry talking about Thanksgiving Hunger Drives, Commitment and Pete Seger, Calluses, Performing and his Grandfather, all of which serve to remind us of the man behind the music. Before there was Bob Geldoff or Band-Aid, there was Harry Chapin raising money in his concerts for hunger relief. In terms of what is new and different on this album, there are several live versions of songs, which serve to remind us how much Harry enjoyed playing for his audiences, and "Sniper" from his first album, which has yet to be released on CD. The first disc ends with "There Only Was One Choice," his longest song from "Dance Band on the Titanic," which certainly takes on an added significance given the whole of Harry's life and the tragedy of his untimely death. The collection ends with a poignant live version of his traditional encore piece, "Circle," with Harry promising to be out to talk to the fans and to see them again some time soon. Even if you have the rest of Harry's albums, this one is still a most worthy addition to your collection. If for some reason you do not own a Harry Chapin album, this is the one you want. Then you will understand why we all miss him so much.

When Harry Chapin died he left a void in the world of popular music that was difficult to fill. By way of tribute he was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal (the highest award the US Congress can award). This album is a celebration of some of his best works taking the listener from "Taxi" where it all started to "Sequal" where the story continued, and "Circle" the 'Chapin Anthum'. Combining live performances, studio recordings, and RARE archive material, each song is a story in its own right and covers every human emotion. If grading out of 10, this man's work gets a 20 every time!

this set is worth buying for the stirring version of circle unavailable on cd elsewhere, the entertaining and informative snippets of harry chat between some of the songs and the inclusion of there only was one choice(unavailable on the rhino boxset),arguably harrys greatest song and certainly his most ambitious(and lengthy)all the other harry favourites are here, taxi, sniper, cats in the cradle etc.a very fine collection that delves deep into what made him the person he was and his commitment to the causes dearest to him.the narration really makes you feel that you have gotten to know him better.essential stuff

Harry Chapin was one of the major stars of the 70's, his continuing influence greatly reduced by his untimely death in '81. In my view his music is superior to many contemporary artists, such as Neil Diamond, and the equal of Kristofferson His compositions are sagas, making them longer than the usual song, but if you have not heard him before, you are in for a magical surprise. It is a pity that once an artist dies, his work does not seem to be broadcast to any extent (how often do you hear Bing now). I thoroughly recommend this DVD, and will be disappointed if you do not feel extended by his talent.
