5.0 out of 5 stars Gold Juno Sword by Georges Bernage 3 Sep 2003
Format:Hardcover
OK- I don't know how to describe this book. Maybe it's one for us anoraks!- I am a born-again plastic modeller. I bought it in France after having visited Normandy and the Overlord beaches, so I initially saw it as a combination of reference book and keepsake; I don't know about anybody else, but my digital photos tend to remain in digital form.
However, the book offers far more. It starts with the background preparations, the build up to the invasion, as well as going into detail as to what the German defences consisted of, and who those defenders were. It continues to give detailed accounts of the operations, step by step, beach by beach, action by action.
Each section is lavishly illustrated with many of the photos unfamiliar to this reader, often depicting a sequence of events.
The German defence systems are given a detailed inspection which appealed to the anorak in me as, again, there are many photos of gun emplacements etc. both before and after combat. The period photos as well as providing a wealth of information for modellers, are often poignant but aways relevant to the text- no 'filler' here.
The period photographs have been interspersed with modern shots of the same locations (including Lord Lovatt's piper Bill Millin in bagpipe-action on the beach in 1944 and again over 50 years later). Somewhat surprisingly many of these locations are pretty much the same as they were almost sixty years ago. Many of the preserved (and some of the not-so-well preserved) coastal defences are shown, along with locations, should you wish to visit, as well as many of the monuments.
Moreover, this book concentrates on the British, Canadian and French activities of D-Day. Hooray.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the specialist 23 April 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Making up for what it lacks in readability with shear mass of interestinginformation, Gold Juno Sword is a book made purely for the specialist.Written for a mid-Channel audience, the book is presented in French withan adequate English translation, but it does contain the occasional error.Yet, this is not really a book to read from cover to cover in a sustainedcampaign, but rather a book to raid occasionally for information. The bookopens with its best segment: an incredibly detailed description of thebeach defenses, illustrated throughout with annotated period maps andschismatic diagrams of the various bunkers. Bernage goes onto describe theCommonwealth forces, including a good narrative on the specialized 79thArmoured Division, the naval side of the operation, and then the combat oneach of the three beaches. The book contains many period and modernphotographs of the beaches and their fortifications. If you are afanatical about military detail or want to really understand the landingsat the tactical level, then here is a book for you, otherwise trysomething more mainstream.

4.0 out of 5 stars Particulary Fresh 8 Feb 2008
By Igors Karpovs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This books adds nothing seriously new, but some moments are interesting. The plus - big crisp photos on glossy paper, covering all moments of the assault on Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. If you are a newbie in this campaign, you are welcome. If you are a prominent researcher, it brings to you at least superb photos. Well done.
