By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Tom Jones is a legend in his own lifetime and there is a bewildering array of compilations available of varying quality. Choosing one is complicated by his career renaissance following his hugely successful Reload album in the nineties. Personally, I prefer to keep that aspect of his career separate from his earlier music. This compilation, focusing on the sixties and seventies, is one of the best compilations of Tom's earlier music. I slightly prefer the European double CD (Singles) but all the big British and American hits from the early part of Tom's career that really matter are on this one as well. American compilations do not always include major British hits that flopped in America but this one does.

Among the classic songs from his peak years (1965 to 1972) that you will find here are It's not unusual, What's new pussycat, Green green grass of home, Detroit city, Funny familiar forgotten feelings, I'll never fall in love again, I'm coming home, Delilah, Help yourself, A minute of your time, Love me tonight, Without love, Daughter of darkness, I who have nothing, She's a lady, Till and The young new Mexican puppeteer. All his other hits from this period are also here.

With a selection of failed singles, B-sides and album tracks also included, this is a brilliant compilation of Tom's music from 1965 to 1975. Other aspects of his career including his nineties comeback are covered by other compilations, but if you want the music that made him famous, this double CD should suit you although I advise you to compare this with Singles before deciding which to buy. Remember to compare prices as well as the track listings - with all the essentials on both collections, you may feel it's not worth the extra even if you prefer the higher-priced set.

Nostalgic listening 3 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
A nostalgic programme on Tom Jones's life and career on the BBC made me sit down to order some collection albums with his greatest hits. Until now I have never owned a CD with his hits, only the old records from the 60s and 70s which I cannot even play at home anylonger. Just love this Gold album as all the songs make me think of my youth and my disco years when he was one of the most played artists together with all the other soul singers. Because to me that's what he was, a true soul singer and certainly at the same high level of them all; Steve Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc. Actually, to me Tom Jones was even bigger and I was a great fan of his. He's now 70 (or over) and is still going strong. Amazing! This is definitely the album you should buy if you want to go down memory lane ...

A great collection of the best of Tom Jones 4 Feb 2005
By Allen Chapman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This collection covers the years 1965 thru 1975 so Tom's cover of Prince's "Kiss" is not here. Honestly you won't miss it. What you do get are 42 killer tracks. All of his big early hits are here, "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat", "Thunderball", "She's a Lady" and "Delilah". For me though the first ten tracks on disc one can be skipped, it's not that they are bad songs, but for me they are just too dated and sound too much alike. For me things get fun with "This And That" a UK only single from 1966. After that is his killer take on the country standard "Green Green Grass Of Home". From that point on there isn't really a weak track. You get his covers of well known hits of the era, "Sixteen Tons", "The Witch Queen Of New Orleans", "Ain't No Sunshine", "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right" and "Pledging My Love" all done with that same bombast and over the top vocal that makes Tom Jones, TOM JONES! Oh sure, middle aged women find something else about Tom Jones that appeals to them, but for the rest of us this is just great music. This is a great collection and I think you'll find once you start playing it, you won't be able to stop, and you'll keep asking yourself why??? You may never know why so just sit back and enjoy!

It's not unusual to enjoy the music of Tom Jones 19 July 2005

+ 1/2 stars...A Near Perfect Collection 8 Mar 2005
By Steve Vrana - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Welsh hunk Tom Jones was the most successful male vocalist to come out of the British Invasion. This 42-track collection chronologically covers his tenure with Parrot records beginning with his 1965 world-wide smash hit "It's Not Unusual" through his final album for the label, 1975's MEMORIES DON'T LEAVE LIKE PEOPLE.

You not only get his trademark hits like "What's New Pussycat?" and "She's a Lady," but also his lesser hits like "Promise Her Anything" (#74), "Not Responsible" (#58) and "Sixteen Tons" (#68). In addition, you also get songs that were minor hits in the U.S., but huge hits in the U.K. Among them, "Funny Familiar Forgotten Feeling" (US #49, UK #8), "I'm Coming Home" (US #57, UK #2), "Til" (US #41, UK #2--this was a 1962 hit for The Angels) and "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" (US. #80, UK #6).

The only thing missing is "Resurrection Shuffle," which was the B-side of his 1971 hit "Puppet Man" and also charted in the lower rungs of the Top 40. With that said, this is over two hours of vintage Tom Jones. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
