Product Description

Guy still believed that Leonora loved him, as she had when she was a young girl, when he led a street gang around London's Notting Hill Gate, a world away from her family home in a mews house in Holland Park. Leonora's mother in particular didn't care for her dark-looking boyfriend, especially when she found out about shoplifting and the drugs.

Guy's obsession with Leonora increased as the years passed, and as they grew apart. He always believed she would come back to him. But even when Leonora told him it could not be like that, that life was not a fairy tale, he could not, would not, accept the truth. And the murderous madness began to take hold of him.

This is a modern story of love gone wrong. Ruth Rendell makes it even more effective by telling the story from Guy,the pursuer's, point of view. He narrates as if everything is normal and Leonra is still in love with him. It is quickly obvious to the reader that she is not, she is merely being tolerant of his attentions. As the plot develops, the charade becomes more complex as Guy's jealousy materialises into murderous rage. But against whom? The ending is both chilling and tragic as Guy appears to have evolved and changed throughout the action. And at the same timew Leonora no longer seems so angelic when her actions are revealed. The ending, believe me, is not the ending you expect. Rumour has it this is about to hit outr TV screens..

By Lawyeraau HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
British author, Ruth Rendell, is, undoubtedly, the doyenne of psychological suspense, painting subtle portraits of offbeat, quirky characters that are just a tad off the beaten path. Delving into their psyches, she draws the reader into the slightly skewed world that they inhabit. Their world then becomes that of the reader, as the author weaves a tapestry of a world that is just a bit awry, deftly letting the reader know that something is wrong, so very wrong.

The author does no less in this well-written novel, as she leads the reader into the mind and world of Guy Curran, a handsome, young man from the slums who has led a hard scrabble life, elevating himself from the bowels of poverty by dint of his own hard work and acquiring great wealth in the process . Unfortunately for him, that hard work included some less than reputable dealings in the drug trade, which provided the capital for his now legitimate businesses.

For years, Guy has been obsessively in love with Leonora Chisholm, an upper class miss who, after years of being his reluctant childhood sweetheart, has rejected him and all the trappings of wealth and comfort he has to offer her. She prefers to live in genteel poverty with her friends, while acquiring a new boyfriend whom her family and friends like. Guy is convinced some of his past, shady dealings have come to the attention of someone in Leonora's family or inner circle. He believes that that individual has persuaded Leonora to turn away from him.

Now, who would go and do such a thing? Read this well-written book and join Guy in the process of eliminating the likely suspect in this twisted tale of obsessive love.

Guy is very rich with a gorgeous house in London and is stunningly handsome. He absolutely adores and worships his long time love Leonora he would do anything for her, give her anything she wants. With him, he says she could have a lovely life.. What's not to like about him then?

Well apart from having a very criminal past including drug dealing and a protection racket and a pretty dodgy present way of life, he is insanely controlling and possesive and paranoid to boot. Leonora is out of love with him and wants to be 'just friends' to keep him sweet, and out of a sense of guilt for letting such an intensive love down, she agrees to meet him every Saturday for lunch. Guy of course, is still convinced she will come back to him and that it is only because of the evil influence of a variety of friends and family that she has grown away from him. To say he is deluded is an understatement. He is something of a sociopath, of a type appearing in other Rendell works.

His simmering paranoia and resentment is tipped over into near madness when he finds out that Leonora is planning to marry and the groom is not going to be him. Light the blue touch paper!!!

The London background is very well observed and detailed and Guy's control freakery believable. I wanted to kick Leonora in the bottom quite often, for not getting rid of this creep early on, but if not the best classic Rendell it is fairly compulsive if somewhat unpleasant reading
