Buying a property is complicated and harrowing at the best of times. Buying one overseas, with unfamiliar bureaucratic procedures to deal with (not to mention the plumbing!), can be terrifyingly traumatic. But factor in a hyperactive daughter who works in Paris and needs a permanent roof over her head, an apartment that requires a huge amount of loving attention to make it habitable and an ever-demanding bladder - and you have the makings of a major crisis. Throw in a husband who doesn't understand either the French or their language, a plumber with more than water pipes on his mind, and an opinionated Frenchman who organises everyone around him. Set them all against the backdrop of one of the world's most exciting and wonderful cities. Tell your story with a liberal sprinkling of humour and what you get is this book.

As a lover of Paris, I picked this book up in an idle moment just to see what Maria Anton had to say about it. After the first couple of pages I was hooked. She brings to life very vividly the bewilderment she felt when, having bought an apartment in Paris a few weeks after leaving hospital in England following a breakdown, she was confronted with the enormity of what she had done.The whole story is hilariously told in the present tense and this helps us to go through it alongside Maria as she lurches from crisis to crisis, coping with not just an empty apartment that needs a great deal of work to make it habitable but also with her irrepressible francophone daughter and embarrassing, chauvinistic husband Dennis - though even he becomes an enthusiastic advocate of the Paris Metro. She encounters the confusing French etiquette of kissing near-strangers and discovers the bewildering complexities of their bureaucratic system. Then there's her constant search for a toilet to satisfy an ever-demanding bladder, during which she finds the Toilets From Heaven. And she meets the Frenchman From Hell, who manages to antagonize even his own countrymen... Anyone who knows the wonderful city of Paris will enjoy seeing it through the eyes of Maria and Dennis, whether failing to get an omelette in a restaurant in Picpus or seeking out the hidden garden above the Gare de Montparnasse. Maria Anton claims that everything in the book is true. There are many wonderfully funny or surreal moments that you just couldn't invent. Who would have thought, for instance, that a third floor apartment on top of a hill could be prone to flooding? And the ending is a master-stroke, as Maria seeks to bring a ring of truth to the book's title. It would spoil the whole thing to reveal it here! If you've read "A Year In The Merde" by Stephen Clarke, you'll find "Going In Seine" every bit as enjoyable. Buy it... enjoy it!

I am a professional in my late 20's and I bought this book recently on a whim. It's not the sort of book I would normally read but I came across it through a spelling error in the search box when looking for something else! (Crazy I know). One for spontenaety, I decided to buy it as it looked like an interesting read. GLAD I DID!!! This was one of the best holiday reads I've had (and I read a couple of books on the beach each holiday). It's a very laid back, easy going book tht carries you away with it on a journey round paris. The style of writing is vibrant and descriptive and effortlessly propells you into the authors world. I normally have a bit of a block when it comes to reading new authors as I am quite set in my ways with my age old favourites but I would urge anyone who feels the same to buy this book and give it a go. You won't regret it.Loved it! *****

I have now given to book to friend who also enjoys travel type reads, she enjoyed it too. What I was particularly impressed with was Maria's honesty and openness about her stay in hospital. I really was left wondering what had happened to this lady to require such lengthy treatment, and thank her for helping to remove the stigmas attached to psychiatric illness and therefore enabling other people to come forward to seek help themselves. I loved reading this book and so did my friend, its great to read that people follow their dreams.
