About the Author

Debbie Jenkins is an entrepreneur, author and publisher and was a life-long city dweller who always longed for a place in the countryside. Her greatest excitement is in owning trees - hundreds of them! She's learning to ride a horse and to show jump, loves doing acrylic paintings and spends most of her time caring for her ever-growing cat and dog colony!
Debs Jenkins in Bando de la Huerta Gear

Her co-author and husband, Marcus Jenkins is a consultant engineer, working in the mapping field. He travelled extensively in his youth, giving him a taste for living abroad. He has a large fully equipped garage with a lathe, bench drill & milling machine and enjoys spending as much time down there as he can, usually with Randy the cat watching. He's learning to play the bass guitar, enjoys driving his boat in the med and likes target shooting.

The authors' Cave House is in the mountains near Corvera, 1 km away from a small village called La Murta, with a population (including them) of 101 people. The village is tidy and peaceful and inhabited by dedicated farmers. They serve on the village fiesta committee most years.

In June 2001 Debbie and Marcus bought a small warehouse, attached to some caves, with 6.5 acres of land. In August 2005 they moved into their new house to enjoy the Murcian lifestyle - going native in Murcia - which they now enjoy with their two rescue dogs, Dani and Fuggles, their six bin cats, Randy, Catalina, Hawkeye, BJ, Hotlips & Radar, their horse Renoir and assorted chickens.

In 2006 Debbie and Marcus bought a second house in the Murcia region in the pretty mountain village of Moratalla.

Debbie writes on travel related topics, especially about Spain, for blogs, travel and inflight magazines. Find out more about Spain at NativeSpain.com & MoratallaTownHouses.com

I thought the last edition of 'Going Native in Spain' was good but this edition helps you find even more things to do, places to see and where to eat in a region that is one of the best kept secrets in Spain.

For anyone who hasn't visited Murcia it is a must see place to explore if you want to discover the real Spain and the latest edition of 'Going Native in Spain' is also must if you want to get the best out of your visit.

After 40 years travelling the world in the airline and the incentive travel industries I found that little known places were as, if not more, satisfying to visit than some of the more well known destinations. I recommend you book your flight, hotel, car and pack or download a copy of 'Going Native in Spain'and find out for yourself the secrets of this delightful region, you really won't be disappointed.

Magnificent Murcia 20 April 2012
Format:Paperback
In an Independent on Sunday article earlier in the year, Lonely Planet co-founder Tony Wheeler insisted the traditional guidebook wasn't dead. Which came as some relief as I was putting the finishing touches to one at the time. It's also thanks to the likes of Debbie and Marcus Jenkins that the travel guide remains in print.
This is the third edition of Going Native in Murcia. It's packed with twice as much information as the previous imprint. Indeed, Debbie and Marcus have put in plenty of legwork as each town in the region is exhaustively covered.
Show the average English person a map of Spain and they'd struggle to locate Murcia in much the same way a particularly disorientated child who has been spun around to excess would to pin the tail on the donkey at a birthday party. It is, as I discover, in the south-east of the Iberian peninsula. Offering a true surf-and-turf experience, it's (in)famous La Manga strip boasts resorts backing onto the Mediterranean whilst its inland areas represent one of Spain's largest agricultural areas.
Marcus and Debbie likeways point out that the locals drop their s's like my Canarian neighbours. It's do instead of dos. Also they're similarly family-friendly, combining a respect for elderly relatives with an unfailing tolerance of children.
I once embarked on a beers-for-breakfast pre-season tour of El Hierro with my football team. Marcus and Debbie point out that we'd be on the brandy in the morning if we arranged a similar visit to Murcia. One thing I get slightly frustrated with living on Gran Canaria is restaurants offering later times to eat than I'm used to in England. The Jenkins reveal the roadside Ventas allow you to dine reasonably when you feel like it. All in all, they're the perfect guides to their adopted region. I just got the latest edition of Going Native in Murcia (3rd) and I'm really impressed. I wasn't sure if I should buy it because I already had the 2nd edition and was worried there wouldn't be any new stuff, but I was wrong. There's loads of new stuff, much more info on the towns and more towns covered. There's a section on health and beauty with a list of the spas and balnearios, info on horse riding and golf, plus some really handy maps.

I also love the location reports from other people - it's good to get other viewpoints too. I liked the tapas guides for Cartagena and the dates of tapas routes and fiestas for the rest of the area. It's a great book to dip in and out of if you're on holiday in Murcia, or planning to move there.

The section on Moratalla is great and really makes me want to go and visit my house up there again, can't wait to see all the changes!
